Hoopbook: Roosevelt stuns Leilehua for state berth

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2022

It was the best of all worlds. It was the worst of all worlds. With the OIA and ILH boys basketball playoffs smushed up into a compact time frame because of the state-tournament date change, it can be a smorgasbord of hoops for fans. But something has to give, of course. When the OIA playoffs tipped off on Saturday, it was a mere two days after the regular season ended. Just like that, the season was done for a gritty […]

Kailua leaps to No. 4 in Boys Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2022

Kailua zoomed four notches higher to No. 4 in Monday’s Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. The Surfriders (12-1 overall) closed regular-season play with wins over Roosevelt and previously-unbeaten Kahuku last week. Kailua (12-1 overall) also collected one first-place vote from a panel of coaches and media. Saint Louis (16-2) remains the No. 1 squad after collecting nine of 11 first-place ballots. The Crusaders, sparked by Aiva Arquette and Hayden Bayudan, finished first in the ILH regular-season standings. Saint Louis and […]

Hoopbook: Girls open Big Dance; Who’s hot, who’s not

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2022

It’s a strange, fascinating world of basketball when the boys playoffs in the OIA and ILH converge with the start of the girls state tournament. If you’re old enough to remember when the girls hoops season flourished in the spring, playing entire days (plural) of the state tourney in the Stan Sheriff Center, you probably miss being able to see high-level boys and girls basketball from November to May. Basketball returned, and some say it should never have left last […]

Neighbor Island powerhouses rise higher in Girls Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2022

‘Iolani remained atop the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 on Monday, collecting nine of 11 first-place votes from a panel of coaches and media. The Raiders (13-2 overall) open play in the Heide & Cook/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships this week as the top seed. No. 2 Konawaena (10-2), a nine-time state champion under coach Bobbie Awa, received two first-place votes. MIL mainstays Lahainaluna (11-3) and Maui (13-3) are entrenched at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Punahou (7-6) moved […]

Hungry Sabers: Campbell guard Julien Parado wants more

By Paul Honda on February 12, 2022

A week ago, the Campbell Sabers were close enough to see the finish line. Prior to the OIA playoffs, Julien Parado was the leading scorer for a squad that was unbeaten in OIA West play. “It’s definitely a goal for all of us. We’re trying to bring something home for Campbell, like a banner. That’s the main goal for us, but now it’s like starting all over,” the junior guard said. Now, with the school’s first OIA girls basketball championship […]

Bracketology: OIA Division I and II boys playoffs tip off Saturday

By Paul Honda on February 11, 2022

The Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs aren’t a mirror of the NBA’s postseason format, but it is pretty darn close. For decades, late-season play has been rewarded in OIA basketball. Nearly every team qualifies for the playoffs. Win and you’re in. Unlike the ILH and MIL, though, consistent success in the OIA doesn’t merit an automatic state-tournament berth, which opens things up for more teams to have shot at the big dance. It drums up drama. Judging from the roaring crowds […]

Jonny Philbrick goes off with 29 as No. 8 Kailua stuns No. 5 Kahuku

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2022

No one man could stop Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola, but a pile of personal fouls certainly did. The high-scoring Kahuku senior sat for a key stretch of the second half with four fouls, allowing No. 8 Kailua to rally from an 11-point deficit for a stunning 50-45 win over No. 5 Kahuku on Thursday night. Westmoreland-Vendiola came into the game averaging 26 points per game. He finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Kailua earned the top seed in the […]

Bracketology: Maui hosts Kaiser, Moanalua visits Waiakea

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2022

The Heide & Cook/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships brackets are out with no surprises in the seedings. ‘Iolani, a season-long No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, is seeded first by the HHSAA committee. Konawaena is seeded second, Lahainaluna third and Campbell fourth. The opening-round “play-in” games on Monday include two sites on the neighbor islands while one site on Oahu is to be determined. Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be at regional sites, Moanalua and McKinley, with the […]
