KS-Hawaii coach Guy Enriques: ‘We had a chance, we let Punahou off’

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2019

Guy Enriques has a long history doing the things he loves. Fisherman. Volleyball player. Basketball player. He still drives from Ka‘u to Kailua-Kona to play in makule hoop leagues with a good friend, Richard Rasay. Then there’s coaching. This voyage to Honolulu was about a potential state championship for the unbeaten Kamehameha-Hawaii Warriors. They battled ILH runner-up Punahou dead even much of the night, but when they needed a hammer, the Warriors came up short in a 25-12, 21-25, 25-20, […]

Damien ready for ‘Iolani’s rough play this time around

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2019

Sometimes, in a land with perhaps two of the most unusual high school leagues in the nation, the best battles occur before the big dance. The immense size of the OIA, which has 23 active football programs, is matched by very few leagues nationally. The ILH, with a total of six football teams, is left in a conundrum, seeing quality programs sit during the state tournament due to basic mathematics. For the ILH, this is true every year, every season, […]

Pac-Five Coach Kip Botelho: Bowl game was ‘long shot’ anyway

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2019

Everyone is content, maybe even Pac-Five. The Wolfpack finished regular-season play 6-3 in Division II play. By all accounts, they’re a team worthy of a playoff spot. But in the era of interleague play, Pac-Five is the outlier, the only program that didn’t have a chance to qualify for postseason play because its league, the ILH, didn’t have any other D-II teams. The invigorated, interleague regular-season schedule for ILH and Oahu Interscholastic Association teams has been absorbed and embraced by […]

The former Mililani star who is second on the all-time Hawaii high school rushing list had arthroscopic surgery on his knee last week. “It’s kind of a week-to-week process,” Malepeai said by phone from Los Angeles on Tuesday morning. “I’m focusing on rehabbing and getting back on the field.” The Trojans (4-3, 3-1 Pac-12) have five regular-season games remaining. Malepeai played in the […]

Kohala hires longtime assistant Kihei Kapeliela as boys hoops coach

By Paul Honda on October 22, 2019

The time is right, and Kihei Kapeliela is ready. The former Kohala Cowboy player is the new varsity boys basketball head coach, taking over the reins from longtime coach Donn Fernandez, who retired recently. Kapeliela was a junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant for 11 years under Fernandez. Expectations for a small school with a strong basketball tradition are high. All but two of last year’s varsity players will return from a team that was 13-5 and reached the […]
