Kahuku wins 27th OIA championship in the most Kahuku of ways

By Billy Hull on October 27, 2019

You can’t fault Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho for trying. Early on this season, the Red Raiders were a mixed bag on offense. At times they were able to ground and pound opponents, but they also weren’t afraid to put four wide receivers out on the field and try to throw the ball around a little bit. After three straight years of losing to Saint Louis in the state tournament, including twice in the championship game, Kahuku felt the need to […]

Leilehua lands on wrong side of instant classic with Moanalua

By Christian Shimabuku on October 26, 2019

Two of the OIA’s best teams in Division I provided an instant classic in Saturday night’s championship game. No. 8 Moanalua and No. 7 Leilehua both had its opportunities to win in regulation, making it all the more agonizing for whoever would lose. It was Leilehua which fell 21-20 in double overtime. The Mules also had two prominent chances to win, but potential game-winning field goals by Konapiliahi Raymond were missed at the end of regulation and in the first […]

Moanalua football celebrates OIA Division I title for injured quarterback RJ Javar

By Christian Shimabuku on October 26, 2019

RJ Javar has only been at Moanalua for a season, but the senior quarterback and Mililani transfer has already made a lasting impression on Na Menehune. Although Javar was unable to play in the second half of No. 8 Moanalua’s 21-20 double-overtime win over No. 7 Leilehua in the OIA Division I championship game on Saturday night, his teammates made it clear that the win was because of him and not in spite of his absence. Na Menehune went up […]

After drilling 22 kills with 11 digs in the Division I final of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena, Kamehameha’a Keonilei Akana was picked as the tournament’s most outstanding player. Akana, a middle who also plays opposite, was also chosen to the D-I all-tournament team last year. Four of Akana’s Warriors teammates also made the D-I all-tournament team — libero Tara De Sa, hitters Devin Kahahawai and Maui Robins and setter Bryanne […]

Kamehameha turned to ‘Makakau’ mode for 22nd state title

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2019

Punahou played all its cards so well. After losing in the ILH final, at home, swept by Kamehameha, the Buffanblu tinkered and adjusted. They brought Jaclyn Matias to the forefront, sharing setting duties with Chloe Kaahanui. Grace Fiaseu stepped up. Madisyn Beirne and Kaia Dunford, their seniors, continued to pound away. It still wasn’t enough in the state final. Kamehameha prevailed 21-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 to capture its 10th state championship in the past 17 seasons under Coach Chris Blake. […]

Faumuina saw the rise of Lady Monarch volleyball as his squad finished his fifth and final season with a 16-1 record, replete with ILH and state crowns. Years of heartbreak make Kaimuki’s OIA D-II championship that much sweeter

By Billy Hull on October 26, 2019

Kaimuki senior Kaulana Kaluna Jr. helped force an interception on defense in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s OIA Division II title game with his pressure on Roosevelt quarterback Sky Ogata. He put his arm down to break his fall, and was worried immediately he might have broke something. The play ended with Keith Hallers intercepting a pass off a tip by teammate Sione Taufa, sending the Kaimuki fans in the stadium on their feet in jubilation. The volume went from […]
