Coaches Tribune: D-II defending champ Kohala in dynamite field

By Paul Honda on February 23, 2022

This group of eight sure is elite. Kohala is back to defend its 2020 Division II boys basketball state title, but the field from top to bottom is without a weak link. Kaimuki is the No. 2 seed in a bit of a surprise, but the Bulldogs have quality wins over Division I programs like Radford, Moanalua and Kaiser. Hawaii Baptist, seeded third, may be the most disciplined squad in the bracket, while Kapaa (fourth seed) and Maui Prep (fifth) […]

By Paul Honda on February 23, 2022

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Monday’s opening-round games isn’t that the favorites won. Maybe it is just that every favorite won by its own choice of methodology. Kahuku pounded the rock inside. Maryknoll won with a deliberate pace. Kailua let Jonny Philbrick eat. ‘Iolani went to the race track. By Paul Honda on February 22, 2022

There was a point early in the second quarter of the Division II state championship game with Sacred Hearts when the Hawaii Baptist ohana held their collective breath. With 5:42 left before halftime, Joey Lin went down and stayed down. The arena went dead silent. “The injuries to us happened all season long,” HBA coach Robin Yamaguchi said. “So our thought was Alyssa Young has to step up again.” The Eagles were ready. After weeks of ups, downs, injuries and […]

By Paul Honda on February 20, 2022

There was mostly joy this week for the ‘Iolani Raiders. And definitely some drama. There were some quiet, tense moments for fans when the Raiders struggled to pull away from a resilient Campbell squad in the semifinals. Konawaena would not relent in the Division I final of the Heide & Cook/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships on Saturday at Blaisdell Center. Coach Dean Young had moments of relief, anguish, even heartbreak and again, joy through the course of three days. The […]
