By Paul Honda on November 24, 2019

Talent. Heart. Performance. Glory. The 2019 Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball All-State Fab 15, released in today’s edition, is chock full of those ingredients — as always. Volleyball players in Hawaii land at the college level often, and the Fab 15 are no exception. The top five of this year’s list, voted by coaches and media, had a bit more consideration than usual. Here’s what some of coaches from elite prep programs said about this year’s top players in the Fab 15: […]

Roosevelt’s rough road ends at same place

By Brian McInnis on November 24, 2019

LAHAINA >> Roosevelt resolved that Lahainaluna would not be the be-all, end-all to its season for a second year in a row. Unfortunately for the Rough Riders, that’s exactly what happened on Saturday night at the Lunas’ Sue D. Cooley Stadium in a 35-0 loss to the three-time defending HHSAA Division II champions. Kui Kahooilihala’s team came in riding high on a 31-7 road win at Kamehameha-Hawaii in the first round. But when the Riders lost fumbles on their first […]

Lahainaluna offense lauds defense in rout of Roosevelt

By Brian McInnis on November 24, 2019

The Lahainaluna offense put up the points, sure, and star running back Joshua Tihada added more state-tournament records to his impressive haul. But it was the Lunas’ defense that set the tone in a 35-0 blanking of Roosevelt on Saturday night in a HHSAA Division II semifinal at Sue D. Cooley Stadium, and the Lunas’ offensive stars were more than happy to give them the plaudits. Tihada, who had 27 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown, now owns the […]

Hilo feels right at home in the rain to advance to its third straight state final

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2019

HILO >> There was no surprise in Kaeo Drummondo’s voice. Moments after Hilo’s 19-9 win over OIA runner-up Leilehua, the Vikings coach gathered his team and spoke about their opponent in the Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Championships. “‘Iolani is very well coached,” he said as his players kneeled together. “We’ve got a short turnaround.” No. 6 Hilo is a perfect 13-0 after a resilient victory over a tough, talented Leilehua squad that never quite found […]

‘Iolani’s secondary feasts on No. 7 Moanalua to reach D-I state final

By Kyle Sakamoto on November 24, 2019

Iolani’s victory over Moanalua on Saturday was all about Brock Hedani picking up touchdowns and the Raiders’ defense picking off passes. Hedani rushed for two scores and caught a touchdown and No. 9 ‘Iolani intercepted five passes on defense in a 35-9 victory over host Moanalua in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. ‘Iolani (10-2) will play No. 6 Hilo for the title at 4 p.m. Friday at Aloha Stadium. >> CLICK HERE FOR […]

Kaimuki finds the end of the road on the Garden Isle again

By Nick Abramo on November 23, 2019

It’s two years in a row now that the Kaimuki Bulldogs have visited Kauai for a postseason game and come home on the losing end. On Saturday, it was a 35-28 loss to KIF champion Kapaa (8-1) after their comeback fell short in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II semifinals at Vidinha Stadium. In 2018, it was a 20-12 defeat to the same Kapaa squad. Looking like they were on the ropes, the Bulldogs fought […]

Mark Kurisu proud of big step forward taken by his Mules

By Paul Honda on November 23, 2019

HILO >> At one time, not so long ago, the Leilehua Mules were quite familiar with mud-bog conditions. The natural surface at Hugh Yoshida Stadium used to turn into a swamp with lakes aplenty. Eventually, that led to the installation of synthetic turf, and the Mules ran and cut happily ever after. Except tonight. Playing on the road for a second week in a row, the OIA Division I runners-up flew to soggy Hilo. They marched into Dr. Francis Wong […]

KIF champion Kapaa will take another swing at winning a state title

By Nick Abramo on November 23, 2019

Kapaa quarterback Kahanu Davis dipped, shimmied, deked, bulled, faked and sprinted his way to 174 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to carry the Warriors to a 35-28 victory over Kaimuki in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Saturday at Lihue’s Vidinha Stadium. And now it’s on to the final against Lahainaluna (10-1) on the day after Thanksgiving. That title game is a place the Warriors (8-1) are going for the fourth […]
