Maryknoll girl hoopsters advance to Glendora tourney semifinals

Two games in, the Lady Spartans of Maryknoll are still alive in the title hunt. Serenity Moananu scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the third quarter as Maryknoll rallied past Yucaipa (Calif.) 64-57 on Friday at the Glendora tournament. The Farrington Governors got one part of the mission done. They just didn’t have a way to fill in the rest of the blanks. Farrington limited Moanalua’s high-scoring junior, Geremy Robinson, to just 13 points, but Na Menehune still coasted to a 72-36 win on Thursday night to open OIA regular-season play. UCF’s Dillon Gabriel wasn’t sure he would play in his first season with the Knights. By the second game of the season, the 2019 Mililani graduate and 2018 Honolulu Star-Advertiser offensive player of the year was UCF’s starting quarterback. Gabriel completed his freshman season in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl and was named the game’s most valuable player after finishing 14-for-24 for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Despite suffering its first loss in more than three years, the Saint Louis Crusaders added another top-15 finish in the nation to its resume. No. 1 pound-for-pound Kysen Terukina of Kamehameha doubles up on the wrestling mat and soccer field

Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina got it done on the wrestling mat and the soccer field the last two days. Terukina, a senior, won the two-day Hawaii Officials Tournament on Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Saint Louis’ Elijah Kaawa in the 132-pound final at Leilehua. A three-time state champion, Terukina is No. 1 in Hawaii Prep World’s Pound-For-Pound Rankings.
