Kordel Ng scored 16 points, including a free throw with 5.4 seconds left, as No. 2 Kamehameha edged No. 1 Maryknoll 46-43 on Tuesday night at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. After Ng’s free throw, Maryknoll advanced the ball to halfcourt, using two time outs. With 2.5 seconds left, inbounds passer Justin Yap misfired as Sage Tolentino, their 7-footer, waited for the ball. Kamehameha dribbled out the final ticks on the clock. “I feel good. Right now, our finishing is a little suspect. […]

2020 girls hoops: When the MIL caught up to the BIIF?

By Paul Honda on January 5, 2020

2020 is more than just a new year. This might be the season when the MIL overtakes the BIIF in girls basketball. Konawaena is still the queen of girls hoops. No program has matched its nine Division I state titles in a 15-year span. But top to bottom, or at least 1 through 5, the MIL has become a force. Defending BIIF champion Waiakea is unbeaten in league play. The MIL, meanwhile, is getting better even as Lahainaluna became mortal. […]

No. 1 Maryknoll clutch at FT line in win over No. 6 MPI

By Paul Honda on January 4, 2020

Top-ranked Maryknoll made 13 of 16 free-throw attempts in the final quarter for a dramatic 42-36 win over sixth-ranked Mid-Pacific at the Owls’ gym on Saturday night. Again, as was the case […]
