Stribling had big season at wide receiver for the Hurricanes with 64 catches for 872 yards and nine TDs. His focus this week is the Polynesian Bowl. “I’m ready for the competition against all these big names. The level it’s at means a lot. The bowl itself […]

Lady Lunas return to Top 10 as sophomore Taylor Eldredge scorches nets

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2020

It is too early to declare anything — the exception being the dominance of defending state champion ‘Iolani — in girls basketball this season, though the Lahainaluna Lunas are inching toward identity. Two wins in the past week have vaulted the proud Lunas back into the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. On Wednesday, the 10th-ranked Lunas hit Honoapi‘ilani Highway, then trekked uphill on Kula Highway to complete the 33-mile journey to King Kekaulike. They swamped Na Alii 66-36 and followed […]

Kamehameha ascends to No. 1 in Boys Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2020

A lot can happen in one year, especially for the Kamehameha Warriors. The Warriors collected all 10 first-place votes today as a unanimous No. 1 choice by coaches and media in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. “Our players deserve all the credit,” Kamehameha coach Larry Park said. “They support each other so well, but the ILH is so tough. We got Punahou tomorrow, then Saint Louis and Mid-Pacific, then ‘Iolani on Monday. All very well-coached and each poses a […]

Methodical, top-ranked Maryknoll boys hand Punahou first ILH loss

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2020

This is precisely why the Maryknoll Spartans are in no rush. Three games in a five-day span, all against Top 10 competition. A relatively young and thin bench. A sophomore center/forward/shooting guard. Coach Kelly Grant’s Spartans are content to walk the ball up the court, execute their offensive sets and, most importantly, get high-percentage shots in crunch time. That was the case on Saturday night in a key 44-32 win over No. 5 Punahou. The Buffanblu had cut a 14-point […]

Stingy defense sparks No. 4 Maryknoll girls over No. 5 Punahou

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2020

Until Saturday, no team had Maryknoll’s number like Punahou. The exception is No. 1 ‘Iolani, but Punahou had already beaten Maryknoll soundly at the Lady Spartans’ gym and won a nail-biter at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. This time, No. 4 Maryknoll turned the tables with a 36-29 win road win over No. 5 Punahou on Saturday afternoon. The win boosted Maryknoll to 4-4 in ILH girls basketball play, solidifying the Spartans’ hold on second place. Punahou dropped to 2-6 in league play. […]

Defense leading the way for Kalani during its late-season run

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2020

For five minutes, when warmups began, the Lady Falcons of Kalani went straight into defensive mode. All footwork, sliding and angling on their side of the floor, working up a sweat. No basketball. After layups and other warmup shots, the Lady Falcons got defensive for 32 minutes against Castle, grinding out a 41-33 win at Earl C. Holmer Gymnasium. >> CLICK HERE FOR A PHOTO GALLERY FROM THE GAME Lile Oyama scored 15 points and sophomore Jennesice Sueing had 10 […]
