Defending OIA champion Kahuku, which has won 23 consecutive games in the regular season, is the No. 1 seed in the playoffs that begin Wednesday at four different sites. The Red Raiders (11-0) have a bye into the quarterfinals on Thursday when they host the winner between West No. 4 Leilehua and East No. 5 Kaiser. The Cougars are the only team the Red Raiders failed to beat by at least 20 points in the regular season, winning by 19 […]

The visiting Warriors got a clutch 3-point shot from Haley Masaki with 24 seconds left to break a 46-all tie as No. 5 Kamehameha edged No. 6 Punahou 51-46 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. “Coach (Pua Straight) just told us to run our play and let our offense come to us,” Masaki said. “When we trust each other, a lot opens up.” It was […]

By Paul Honda on January 20, 2020

The Punahou Buffanblu are heating up while the Saint Louis Crusaders are wondering what just happened. Ryder Hsiung had the hottest quarter of the season, swishing five consecutive 3-point shots in the second quarter, to finish with 24 points in Punahou’s 59-49 win over Saint Louis. Third-ranked Punahou improved to 4-2 in ILH play (14-8 overall). Saint Louis had a chance to even its league mark, but dropped to 2-4 (3-8 overall). If not for Hsiung’s torrid shooting — he […]

Since the return of Robbie Sauvao from California, Kahuku has won six in a row, including the 63-53 overtime win against the Mustangs. “We’re proud of the boys. They continue to work […]

Local boys grab the spotlight in Polynesian Bowl

By Nick Abramo on January 19, 2020

Lanakila Pei had his day in the sun — or his night under the lights, if you will. A star in Hawaii and unheralded everywhere else, Pei had himself a ballgame at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night. The ‘Iolani safety, who was playing cornerback for the first time, intercepted two passes, had eight tackles and broke up two passes in key situations. For that effort, he was named Defensive MVP in Team Mauka’s 20-13 victory over Team Makai in the […]

By Paul Honda on January 19, 2020

Saint Louis slotback Koali Nishigaya just wants an opportunity to fulfill his dream. After Saturday night at the Polynesian Bowl, he’s hoping a scholarship offer from a FBS program opens up. The explosive playmaker got his share of touches, nearly scoring on a 6-yard run late in the game. He also had two receptions for 38 yards. Prior to the Polynesian Bowl, his only QB had been longtime teammate Jayden de Laura, and Nishigaya produced an All-State first-team senior season. […]

Polynesian Bowl stars: Expect Demond Demas and Kris Hutson to excel in college

By Nick Abramo on January 19, 2020

Demond Demas and Kris Hutson are outspoken. They can talk. Their performances are big-time. Expect to see both on your television screens on Saturday mornings in the near future. Demas’ story is filled with intrigue. He didn’t play at all in his senior season, until Saturday night’s Polynesian Bowl at Aloha Stadium. He was ineligible to play in Texas due to a transfer, but, as he said last night, the transfer was not for athletic reasons. Nonetheless, Demas will be […]
