By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

There will be no All-Big Island girls basketball state final, but the Waiakea Warriors sure gave it a shot. With the second-seeded Konawaena Wildcats seated and looking on with the rest of the crowd of 886 at Blaisdell Arena, Waiakea pushed top-seeded ‘Iolani from the opening tip. Trailing 22-16 at the half, Waiakea got within two points of the defending state champions. Then ‘Iolani got a pair of 3-point bombs from Alexis Huntimer to open a 37-27 lead with 1:15 […]

Night and day, day and night. Caiyle Kaupu has gone from one extreme to another, and her Konawaena teammates and coaches are quite stoked about this. Kaupu struggled with six points in the Wildcats’ 40-37 win over King Kekaulike on Thursday. On Friday, she was unstoppable on the block against the one of the state’s strongest defensive teams, Kahuku. Kaupu pumped in 37 points, one shy of the state-tournament record, on 17-for-20 shooting from the field as the second-seeded Wildcats […]

Mid-Pacific’s shocking OT win eliminates Punahou from states, moves Owls 1 game away

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

The kookiness, zaniness and flat-out heartbreak is real across the state this week — just ask Punahou and Waiakea. Konawaena, the fourth-place team in the BIIF, stunned first-place Waiakea 66-50 on Tuesday, eliminating the Warriors from title and state-berth contention. Waiakea was 10-1 during the regular season, but had no protection, and the playoff games were played at Kealakehe. Konawaena then lost to Kamehameha-Hawaii, which had earlier knocked Hilo out. KS-Hawaii and Konawaena will represent the BIIF at the D-I […]

Now that the OIA championships are here, Moanalua is looking for more. For all of their efforts at Farrington, only two Na Menehune received top seeds for today and Saturday’s tournament in Lana […]

HBA stuns Seabury Hall, Hanalani ousts Waimea as ILH dominates D-II state tourney

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

This is why we play the game. In Hilo, anything can happen with a field this balanced. Now we have the ILH’s first-, second- and third-place teams in the final four of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships in Division II. Parity, or ILH D-II, now rules, and defending state champion Hawaii Baptist is back in the picture after finishing third in the ILH. The Eagles’ 50-37 win over 2-seed Seabury Hall says a lot about the tough ILH Division […]
