Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina credits long list for ILH slam

By Jerry Campany on February 9, 2020

Kysen Terukina had a lot of assists to hand out after pulling off the ILH slam at Kamehameha on Saturday. Perhaps the biggest one went to his opponent.  Sure, Terukina mentioned his coaches, teammates and famous family after shutting out Elijah Kaawa of Saint Louis 5-0 in the final. But it was the Crusader who got most of the praise. “I give him props, he comes out every week and wrestles, since my freshman year,” Terukina said. “He makes every […]

Punahou 3-peaters Vincent Terrell and Legend Matautia look ahead to states

By Jerry Campany on February 9, 2020

The Punahou boys wrestling team is getting pretty tired of second place.  The Buffanblu had more ILH champions (seven) than Kamehameha (five) on Saturday at the league championships held at Kamehameha, but still could not wrestle the crown from the defending champions. Punahou also finished second to Kamehameha last year at states, and hasn’t won it all since Matt Oney‘s dynasty drew its final breath in 2012.  “It’s amazing after last year, coming in second in the ILH and second […]

Nine-time state champ Konawaena will miss Caiyle Kaupu, but future remains bright

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2020

The bar is sky high to the heavens. Twenty-three wins. Four losses. Two Wildcats on the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships All-Tournament team. Nine Division I state titles since 2004. Thirteen appearances in the state final. When the 2020 state championship game concluded and ‘Iolani claimed the big trophy, Bobbie Awa gave her team some space. The players, their families and friends congregated near one of the locker rooms, draped in lei and smothered with hugs. The mood, though, was […]

Steak is the meal of choice after Hanalani makes history with first state championship

By Billy Hull on February 9, 2020

An hour after watching his girls basketball team win the first state championship in the 20-year history of Hanalani as an HHSAA-member school, Royals coach Charles Hiers had to make a pit stop after leaving Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium. “I’m buying some steaks to take back and cook up for the team,” Hiers said when reached by phone. “Can I call you back?” The interview could wait. A well-deserved meal of the best red meat Hiers could find late on […]

Kalaheo joins the list of paddling state champions with mixed crew win

By Noelle Kakimoto on February 9, 2020

(Note: This story also appeared in Sunday’s edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser) The 2020 state paddling championships saw three different victors, with Kamehameha’s girls finishing first, Punahou’s boys avenging last year’s loss, and Kalaheo notching the first mixed victory outside of a Kamehameha, Punahou or Seabury team since 2010. The half-mile sprints at Keehi Lagoon were neck-and-neck for most of the heats up through the midpoint turn around each team’s flag on Saturday. Kamehameha senior Teiana Gonsalves praised her team’s […]

Kamehameha and Hawaii Prep shake off slow starts to repeat in state girls soccer

By Nick Abramo on February 9, 2020

The winning story lines were similar. Two final matches in The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships were decided in the late going on Saturday. Koa-trophy winning Kamehameha in Division I and Hawaii Prep in D-II were in tie ballgames and in jeopardy of being dethroned as reigning champions when the halftime breaks came around. For the top-seeded ILH champion Warriors (11-0-2), their second straight state title and 10th overall in the 39th year of the tournament was not […]

‘Iolani’s toughness, poise crucial in winning second straight state championship

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2020

The ‘Iolani Raiders are generally positionless, but their status is on a throne. ‘Iolani withstood everything the Konawaena dynasty brought to battle. Even after losing a 14-point lead, trailing 33-28 in the third quarter, the Raiders never wilted. They just grew stronger. The skill is across the roster. The savvy is, as well. The power, though, generates from sisters Lily Wahinekapu and Jovi Lefotu, who combined for 42 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as ‘Iolani made it back-to-back state […]
