By Nick Abramo on February 21, 2020

It’s been quite a wrestling journey this year for Shannlynne Mahoe of Nanakuli. In the past, she was a steady performer at 225 pounds, even though she was pretty much about 193 on the scale. It’s a different story this year. Mahoe dropped weight and is about 159 now, wrestling in the 168-pound class. After winning the OIA title, Mahoe is out to get the next step — a gold medal in the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships at Blaisdell Arena. […]

By Jerry Campany on February 21, 2020

Mililani’s Kennedy Javier isn’t going to let yet another injury ruin her last high school wrestling tournament. Javier, a senior, beat MIL champion Nalani Kirkman 15-10 to move on to the second round of the 102-pound weight class. Javier was down 7-2 in the first period when she hurt her knee and stayed on the mat for a while. Just when it looked like she might be done, she toed the line and quickly ran off six straight points to […]

Rookies no more: Roosevelt in first state final

By Paul Honda on February 21, 2020

Somewhere during the smattering of losses to Baldwin, Waiakea, Kailua, Moanalua and Kahuku, Steve Hathaway and his staff got the binoculars out. For Roosevelt, the rewards would come much further down the road. The fourth-seeded Rough Riders knocked out No. 1 seed Hawaii Prep on Thursday night and will battle Kohala for the Division II state championship at Stan Sheriff Center. OIA D-II champion Roosevelt (12-7) doesn’t play with a chip on its shoulder, even as the lowest seeded of […]

By Paul Honda on February 21, 2020

It’s not just traveling on a budget. It’s about family time for the Kohala Cowboys. “We’re cooking breakfast right now,” coach Kihei Kapeliela said by phone at 9:30 a.m. “Our team mom and I are cooking French toast, bacon, eggs, rice and Portuguese sausage.” There’s no cooking quite like home cooking, or least in a hotel equipped with a kitchen. Kohala has come a long way to play in the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division II state tourney. With a 45-27 […]

Top seed Kamehameha reaches final amid concern for Christmas Togiai’s injury

By Paul Honda on February 20, 2020

There was so much that was part of a wondrous night in Kamehameha’s 48-39 semifinal win over Kahuku. Kordel Ng’s one-handed alley-oop dunk, lobbed high by teammate and best friend Christmas Togiai. It came after the whistle and didn’t count, but wow. The wow factor was lit. The transition 3 by Paliku Kamaka, also delivered by Togiai, to cap a 12-0 run that gave the Warriors the lead for good. Alert plays across the floor, including center Bailey Lee’s timeout […]

Playing through injury, Liko Soares’ grit sparks Maryknoll to semifinal win

By Paul Honda on February 20, 2020

Liko Soares has his way of dealing with a partially torn meniscus. Maryknoll’s trainer will ask about his pain level, and Soares does what he does. The injury will require surgery after the season. For now, it’s a matter of pain management. Pain tolerance. “It’s sore. It’s a 12,” Soares said of the pain level. “I usually just lie and say 3. Afterwards is when it hurts. It hurts a lot.” Getting one torn before the state tournament, that could […]
