Castle’s stunning comeback clinches playoff spot

By Christian Shimabuku on September 29, 2018

A 21-yard field goal attempt was all that stood between Castle and an improbable comeback victory over Aiea on Saturday night. No point in trying to guide the chip shot, Knights kicker Cheyden Costa told himself with four seconds left in regulation. He was going to boom the kick. “I just felt a little nervous there but I thought to myself ‘It’s just a practice thing.’ I’ve been doing it over and over again,” he said. “I felt great. It […]

Castle a win away from D-I playoff berth

By Billy Hull on September 23, 2018

Three weeks ago, the Castle Knights were winless and dealing with a video that had surfaced on social media showing players running full sprint at each other from 20 yards away putting vicious hits on their teammates. Second-year coach John Hao referred all media inquiries on the matter to the Department of Education, but it was the lowest point of the season for a Castle team that was 0-4 for the first time since 2012. Just a short time later […]

Punivai prolific again as Castle downs Kailua

By Brian McInnis on September 22, 2018

Things got off to an inauspicious start for Castle in its anticipated Windward rivalry matchup with Kailua. First, there were supposed to be Golden Knights paratroopers from the National Guard timed to land with the playing of the national anthem. The idea was, they’d present the game ball. A packed crowd waited anxiously for several minutes pregame … only to have it called off due to uncooperative winds in Kaneohe. Once things got going, the Knights were then tackled for […]

Sky kick that’s tough to handle is fumbled and Castle recovers at the Kailua 25. Not looking good for the Surfriders. 9:59: Punivai makes Kailua pay with a 15-yard pinball run […]

Castle finds its quarterback

By Brian McInnis on September 15, 2018

It took a little while, but Castle is set at quarterback. The Knights, who lost their first four games of the season — including three in OIA Division I play — have new life behind the new guy taking snaps. With running back Senituli “Tuli” Punivai converted to quarterback, Castle has wins over Nanakuli (22-9) last week and Radford (45-33) Friday night. The 45 points the Knights (2-4, 2-3 OIA Division I) hung on the Rams were their most since a […]

DOE says Castle video of dangerous tackle drills has been addressed

By Nick Abramo on August 31, 2018

There is a video making the rounds on social media, showing Castle football players doing a drill that appears to be seriously dangerous. The video was taken by a parent, who can be heard saying things like, “This is a concussion waiting to happen.” It also shows two players getting hurt, including one who is seen getting attention from coaches. The school and the Hawaii Department of Education have taken steps to make sure the Knights coaches are not putting […]
