Seariders no stranger to Ewa Beach

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 11, 2013

The road to Ewa Beach has become quite familiar for the Waianae football team. The sixth-ranked Seariders will board the bus again on Friday for an OIA Red West game at No. 8 Campbell, the third straight meeting in the series to be played on the Sabers’ home field. Waianae (4-1, 2-1 OIA Red West) played all of its games on the road last year while the school’s bleachers were renovated, though the Seariders were the designated home team in a […]

Campbell QB Hurd attacks by land and air

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 31, 2013

Campbell coach Amosa Amosa gave quarterback Isaac Hurd a number to shoot for in the summer pass league. “In pass league if you’re not completing 70 percent of your passes you’re not doing much because there’s no rush, there’s no pressure,” Amosa said. Completion percentage is one of the few stats Amosa tracks in summer play and Hurd hit his targets 72 percent of the time in what his coach described as “the best pass league we’ve had at Campbell […]

Update: Leilehua 28, Campbell 21, final

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2013

6:26 p.m. Partly cloudy here in Wahiawa. A perfect evening for prep football. I ran into Leilehua boys basketball coach Patrick Wetzel, who guaranteed me that it’ll rain later. “This is Wahiawa,” he reminded me. “It always rains.” If it rains, shooting video becomes problematic without an umbrella. Blogging becomes near impossible since I’m situated in the bleachers, not the press box. The box here is ancient and small, and every available window is occupied. No matter what, the view […]

Football Tour: Campbell

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2013

Tour stop: Friday, Aug. 2, 2013 There’s something just a little bit promising when a team shows up on the field early, proceeds in an orderly manner and gets the job done smoothly. That’s what we had at Campbell, just a few days after the Sabers had a solid performance in a scrimmage at Kahuku. This time, my photos were basic, no poses. I had to get from Ewa to Hawaii Kai (Kaiser) quickly. The new Sabers uniforms pop, though. […]

Kaiser closes gap, still has work to do

By Billy Hull on August 9, 2013

It’s no secret Rich Miano wanted his Kaiser football team playing in the OIA Red conference this year. Friday night, the Cougars played their only game of the season against an OIA Red opponent before opening play in the OIA White division next Saturday against Kalani. Kaiser’s defense, with a trio of impressive linebackers in senior Fitou Fisiiahi (6-0, 235), sophomore Parker Higgins (5-10, 199) and freshman Isaac Slade-Matautia (6-1, 185), held its own against a Campbell team that might […]

Kahuku starts hitting

By Jerry Campany on August 1, 2013

Defending state champion Kahuku hosted Campbell for a scrimmage on Thursday, and a good time was had by all (except for the screaming coaches). “Ever since Thanksgiving we have been going against our teammates,” Kahuku defensive end Lamone Williams said. “It was good to go against somebody else.” Williams ended Campbell’s last possession of the scrimmage with a sack of the quarterback, making up for being blocked on the previous play and a long pass to start the 2-minute drill.
