Moanalua, Punahou rule the beach

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2013

Sand volleyball, or beach volleyball, is not far away from becoming a state championship sport. HHSAA executive director Christopher Chun said the ball is literally in the hands of the leagues. If and when there are at least three leagues competing in the sport, it can be drawn up for state-championship sanctioning by the HHSAA. Chun said he would fully support that measure. For now, Moanalua’s boys and Punahou’s girls are the unofficial state champions. Skylan Engleman and Austin Amian […]

HIADA: Regionals get thumbs up

By Paul Honda on June 9, 2013

This big dance might just be on the neighbor islands. Administrators across the state passed a proposal on Sunday that will send teams across the islands for the first two rounds of the state girls basketball and boys volleyball championships. The proposal was one of several that made it out of committee and to the general assembly of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference at Ala Moana Hotel. Most of the remaining proposals involved rule changes, leaving the regionals […]

More post-match: Punahou volleyball

By Paul Honda on March 20, 2012

(Some extra info following last night’s Punahou-Maryknoll boys volleyball match. See the game story here.) Punahou’s Larry “Tui” Tuileta and Micah Ma‘a may be the best hitter-setter duo in the state, even at their young ages.  “We’ve played beach together, Outrigger (Canoe Club) together. The connection is there,” said the springy Tuileta, who watches his diet carefully and doesn’t drink soda.  The team has won two matches now, including a three-set victory at Kamehameha, since returning from the Best of […]
