Young: Passionate about helping

By Paul Honda on December 23, 2015

For decades, Glenn Young would sit and watch. He worked tirelessly as a basketball — and football — coach, and as the founder and, basically, one-man operator of the one of the nation’s premier high school tournaments, the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. But after all the loose ends were tied up, his job was to observe and keep the wheels spinning. And right to the end, Young embraced his passion, and the prep sports world was better for it. Young passed […]

UPDATE: Sierra Canyon 53, La Lumiere 48, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

The championship game of the ‘Iolani Classic is finally upon us. Two potent teams. The house is nearly packed. Maybe 15 or so seats left. I’ll update as time permits. The game story goes in the print edition tomorrow and I’ve got my hands busy with stats, running play by play notebook and camera. Fun stuff, just don’t have enough hands to do consistent live blog. But I’ll update the score. FIRST QUARTER LL 4, SC 0, 6:04. LL called […]

LIVE BLOG: Fairfax 44, Lone Peak 40, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

It’s a second game in a row for Utah’s Lone Peak Knights against a Southern California squad. Fairfax slowed the pace to a crawl yesterday and was close before losing to powerful La Lumiere (Ind.) 29-20 in the semifinal round. Prior to that, the Lions defeated Mid-Pacific 60-37 and ‘Iolani 47-43. Lone Peak defeated Farrington 89-24 on the first day, then edged Mount St. Joseph 47-46 in the quarterfinals before losing to Sierra Canyon on Monday 73-45. This is the […]

UPDATE: Mt. St. Joseph 76, Master’s 69, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

Great matchup The Master’s Academy (Fla.), featuring uber-quick Jakobi Bonner, and the Gaels of Mount St. Joseph (Md.). Both schools are in the ‘Iolani Classic for the first time and have played well. I’ve seen more of the Eagles than the Gaels, so I know what to expect of them, especially Bonner and crafty PG Tanner Rubio. FIRST QUARTER Rubio is on fire already with two NBA-range treys and a drive baseline for a layup. Eagles lead 18-11. Brooks Cluxton, […]

The Bulldogs lost to Mount St. Joseph (Md.) 79-38 on Monday. ‘Iolani downed Kaimuki 58-39 before falling to Fairfax (Calif.) 47-43 in the quarterfinals. LIVE BLOG: Warriors 55, Owls 41, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

Today’s final matchups at the ‘Iolani Classic has more intraleague action than I normally would prefer. But the early game between Kahuku and Kaimuki of the OIA East was competitive. So was the just-completed Kaiser-Farrington (OIA East) matchup. Now we have Kamehameha, ranked No. 6 in today’s Star-Advertiser Top 10, and Mid-Pacific of the ILH. The Owls are coming off a 39-38 upset win over No. 2 Kaiser. They lost to Fairfax in the opening round, then topped Kaimuki 72-41. […]

LIVE BLOG: #2 Kaiser 72, Farrington 58, F

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2015

A matchup of OIA East teams in this consolation game at the ‘Iolani Classic. On paper, it might not look extremely interesting, but this is a preview of what they’ll do (or not do) come regular season. Kaiser is coming off a 39-38 loss to a tough Mid-Pacific squad. At the time, Kaiser was ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10. (I haven’t taken a look at the new rankings that were released this morning.) Farrington? They upset then-No. […]
