Cue Jeopardy music: ILH draw in process

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2016

Some pupus for those of you waiting patiently for news of the ILH boys basketball draw. As of noon today, according to the ILH office, the tiebreaker process for the four, yes FOUR teams tied for first place as the regular-season schedule concluded last night, is underway. I asked if the “draw” was done and the answer I received was, “We’re working on it.” In other words, the draw may have been done this morning. It may be done this […]

Entering the Age of Iron Men

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2016

There’s the 6-foot-6 kid who has that pep in his step again, lifting Punahou to a seriously clutch road win. There’s the other 6-6 kid, a Wes Unseld clone from Maui now playing for Saint Louis, his dream of a weekend trip home completely obliterated. But first, there was Noa Purcell, on the floor in front of the Saint Louis bench as the buzzer sounded. It was Tuesday night and the first-place Saint Louis Crusaders had lost to host Kamehameha […]

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2016

If, if, if. The strange and amazing brew that is ILH boys basketball is keeping Peter Estomago on his toes. With so much murkiness and excitement because of this year’s extreme parity, the league’s basketball coordinator has been navigating threw a slew of potential scenarios in both boys and girls hoops. First, the boys. Saint Louis is 6-3 in league play after a loss at Kamehameha on Tuesday. Meanwhile, ‘Iolani, Kamehameha and Punahou lurk at 5-4. If tonight’s final night […]

House of Blues: No easy road to ILH throne

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2016

The Saint Louis Crusaders arrived at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium cool and collected. Confident and just one win away from celebrating an oh, so hard route to the state tourney. The Kamehameha Warriors said, no, no, no, and won a 71-70 thriller on Tuesday night to wreck Saint Louis’ plans. Even after trailing 22-12 in the first half, Kamehameha didn’t panic. Even after allowing the Crusaders’ he-man, mighty Tristan Nichols, to power and finesse his way to 24 points, including 13 in […]

UPDATE: Kamehameha 71, Saint Louis 70, F

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2016

Just a couple of minutes until tip-off. If Saint Louis wins, a state-tourney berth is theirs. If Kamehameha wins, UH-ohh… The logjam for second place could turn out to be a logjam for first by week’s end. FIRST HALF Saint Louis started five reserves and I don’t know why yet. The starters entered with 3:02 left in the first quarter with STL trailing 6-3. They went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead. The Crusaders led 14-10 entering the […]

The Other Saints: St. Francis rolling

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2016

And yes, St. Francis basketball fans, you are celebrating. St. Francis sealed its state-tourney berth by clinching first place in the ILH Division II season at 12-0. While University High got lots of attention by playing in some of the top D-I preseason tourneys, coach Ron Durant gradually built his Saints into a formidable force. Freshman guard Kameron Ng and 6-foot-2 junior Supilani Mailei have led a balanced Saint attack through what has been a mesmerizing season to date. St. […]

Driver’s Seat: St. Louis 1 win from big dance

By Paul Honda on February 2, 2016

Every day, every night, it’s been a mantra of “Say whaaaat?” in ILH boys basketball. No disrespect to the relative parity of the OIA East. No insult whatsoever to the mini-surprise of Baldwin’s midseason win over Lahainaluna in the MIL. No shade, as the kids say, regarding the BIIF’s wacky race. Nope. In the ILH, every night brings a “Wow” and a “Now what?” The now what is this: First-place Saint Louis is 6-2 in league play with two games […]
