By Paul Honda on December 13, 2016

Returning All-State Fab 15 selection Captain Whitlock has studied, worked and persevered. The Kalaheo senior guard dropped 40 in the preseason opener against Saint Louis, but one day later suffered a hip flexor injury. Captain chatted via phone and text for this Q&A about Kalaheo basketball, being the son of a UH basketball star, producing and rapping his own music, and his pride in his Marshallese heritage. By Paul Honda on December 10, 2016

Here in time of the second game of Saturday at the OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua High School gym. I was at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic (girls) the past two days, which was a great amount of fun. Time to catch up with the boys. Kapolei (6-2) has already defeated Mid-Pacific (3-1) 57-52 in today’s first game. It is Kapolei’s first win in the tourney, beating a team that beat Kalaheo on Friday. It’s looking like the OIA will be completely […]

Boys Hoops: Lots of potential contenders

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2016

This is how early it is in the boys basketball universe: There are still myriad tournaments to be played, and as Maryknoll girls coach Chico Furtado noted a couple of weeks ago, the boys have seven weeks (in the ILH) from day 1 to league opener while the girls had 26 days. Such is the way in the world of Hawaii high school basketball. I still miss the years when the boys and girls played in separate seasons and I […]

Ex-Menehune Keene still leads NCAA in scoring

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2016

Rolling and rolling, that’s all Marcus Keene is doing. The former Moanalua guard, who played for Na Menehune as a freshman, continues to lead the nation in scoring at 30.4 points per game. The Central Michigan junior turned in a couple of 30-point games last week and was named American Sports Network’s men’s basketball player of the week. The 5-foot-9 guard was also named Mid-American Conference West Division player of the week. Keene scored 36 points on 13-for-23 shooting from […]

Punahou, Konawaena at No. 1 in hoops polls

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2016

So much for carryover respect. Punahou is the No. 1 team in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 of the season, outpointing ILH rival ‘Iolani. The Buffanblu, who are unbeaten in preseason play, gathered 10 of 18 potential first-place votes in the balloting of coaches and media. The defending state champion Raiders of ‘Iolani collected five first-place votes. They lost to Kailua in the semifinals of the Surfrider Holiday Classic on Friday. Kamehameha, which is unbeaten after capturing […]

Surfrider Classic title bittersweet for Tacon

By Paul Honda on December 4, 2016

Somewhere above, Julie Kauweloa smiled as the Kailua Surfriders and Kamehameha Warriors played for the Surfrider Holiday Classic championship on Saturday night. Kauweloa passed away on Monday, just days before her brother, Greg Tacon, led his Kamehameha boys basketball team at the Surfrider Holiday Classic. Her husband is a junior varsity coach at Kailua, and the families, including Kailua varsity coach Wally Marciel‘s ohana, are interconnected in many ways. “It was great that we got play each other,” Tacon said, […]
