Monster dunks replace clapping for Avea

By Paul Honda on February 16, 2017

Sometimes it’s best not to clap. Samuta Avea learned this on Wednesday night during Kahuku’s 87-45 quarterfinal victory over Kalaheo at the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships. The Red Raiders zoomed to a 13-0 lead and dominated all the way through. There was enough competitiveness and trash talking coming from Kalaheo, though, to stir up Avea. The 6-foot-6 senior responded by clapping hard — very hard — when Kalaheo was whistled for a foul during the second quarter. An official […]

Davis keeps golden promise to Falcons

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2017

Nathan Davis has always been a man of his word, so when his Kalani boys basketball team came through with the school’s first OIA title, he was golden. The longtime coach and teacher kept his promise to the team and bleached his hair blonde – or gold — after their 42-34 win over Farrington in the OIA Division II title game on Thursday. The team negotiated the deal while returning to Oahu from Hilo during preseason after winning a tournament […]

Heartbreak, triumph: A wild, Wildcat season

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2017

There are lows and there are highs, near and far. The Konawaena Wildcats know this. On Saturday night, the Wildcats made the 112-mile trek from Kealakekua to the Afook-Chinen Hilo Civic Auditorium for the BIIF boys basketball championship game. Down most of the night, they rallied to take a three-point lead against the Waiakea Warriors. Konawaena, the regular-season first-place team, was unable to hold on. Calvin Mattos hit a clutch 3 and Kiai Apele stole the ensuing inbounds pass for […]

Saints march into D-II Big Dance as top seed

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2017

Bigger isn’t necessarily better. That’s the beauty of small-school sports, where fans are often far more passionate, even rabid, compared to their big-city contemporaries. The Division II bracket of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships tips off today at Kalani and St, Francis High Schools. Here’s a look at eight-team field powerhouses and underdogs, all chasing a title won by University last season. The Junior Rainbows didn’t make it to the big dance this time. Kalani bracket St. Francis (23-4, […]

The Elite 8 and some Mello chat

By Paul Honda on February 14, 2017

And then there were eight. The Division I bracket of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships has condensed to a group of eight. In the span of a few hours on Monday night, one-time unbeaten OIA West power Kapolei was ousted. So was one of the beasts of the OIA East, Kailua. As expected, Kalaheo and defending state champion ‘Iolani advanced. But the tourney that once was a bastion held primarily or entirely in Blaisdell Center, then later split apart […]

A look at Big Dance and why 16 would be sweet

By Paul Honda on February 13, 2017

This Monday dancing business is still not quite embedded into the minds of all prep hoop fans. But it is Monday and it is time for day one of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships. As it was with girls volleyball and girls basketball, Monday is something unique now. There was a three-day break between the first and second (quarterfinal) rounds for girls volleyball and basketball. With boys basketball, the break is two days, with the tourney resuming on a […]

Punahou edges ‘Iolani 45-40 for ILH title

By Paul Honda on February 12, 2017

A lot changed in 24 hours, and it had everything to do with Punahou’s grit. The Buffanblu bounced back from a loss to ‘Iolani in the ILH playoff tournament title game on Friday to edge the Raiders on Saturday, 45-40, at ‘Iolani’s gym, to capture the league championship. It was a crazy, loud night at the Raiders’ gym, but Punahou got four key free throws in the final 29.9 seconds by Hunter Hosoda, who had been scoreless to that point. […]
