By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

Micah Mitchell scored 19 points as Hawaii Baptist held on for a 58-49 win over Kaimuki in the opening game of the Hawaii Self Storage McKinley Black and Gold Classic on Friday afternoon. The Eagles shot 8-for-24 from 3-point range, but overcame an inconsistent stroke from deep by attacking Kaimuki’s man defense. Cole Galicinao added 15 points and Adam Kikuta tallied 14 for the Eagles (2-0). Kaimuki also stayed in the game by aggressively driving on HBA’s man defense. The […]

Reserve power fuels Maryknoll win over Mililani

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

For decades, both as a player and a coach, Kelly Grant valued the perimeter shot. Whether it was emphasized by his high school and college coach, Tony Sellitto, or by himself later as a coach, Grant’s teams at Kaimuki, then at Maryknoll, have often been very good from the 3-point arc. On Saturday, the Spartans pounded the ball into the post, looking very little like last year’s perimeter-oriented team. Then came backup guard Makoto Kamata, who sank two treys during […]

Kahuku welcomes major hoops talent in Smith

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2017

The Kahuku basketball team will be defending its Division I state championship this year, and the arrival of Galen Tolu Smith, a transfer from Mississippi, might make it just a bit easier. The 6-foot-10 senior center/forward who enrolled at the school in the fall recently signed a letter of intent to play for Western Kentucky. The person who knows him best, his father Galen Smith, concisely gave us his take on what Hawaii basketball fans can expect to see on […]

Pardini has Kalaheo in experimental mode

By Paul Honda on November 21, 2017

The canvas is blank at Kalaheo, which is something coach Rob Pardini seems to enjoy. The Mustangs graduated tremendous talent last June, including scoring guard Captain Whitlock and Noah Woodby. With Andrew Kearney and Ryan Pardini leading the way, Kalaheo looked like a team nearing regular-season form in a 65-27 win over Waianae on Monday night at the Pete Smith Classic. Another key returnee, scrappy Harry Wallace, is sidelined with a foot injury, but the Mustangs (2-0) made do with […]

Tigers trying to run while staying disciplined

By Paul Honda on November 21, 2017

The eye test before tip-off was incomplete. The McKinley Tigers, a group of fine, young gentlemen, don’t have a lot of height, girth or swagger. But after the tip, it was all business for coach Duane Omori’s team. Even this early, scarcely one week into preseason play, the Tigers are moving the ball, spacing the court, battling on the boards against bigger teams. McKinley took it on the chin in a wipeout loss to defending D-II state champion St. Francis […]
