Smith pumps in 27 as Kahuku rallies past Campbell

By Paul Honda on November 30, 2017

Tolu Smith is just a high school senior, and he is the real deal. His spin moves near the block recall a young Hakeem Olajuwon, though the “Dream” was a college freshman when he was unveiled to American roundball enthusiasts. Smith’s soft touch near the rim? Very Timmy. As in Tim Duncan, which isn’t a stretch considering Smith is 6-foot-10 — like Olajuwon — and Duncan was listed at 6-11 through his NBA career. Smith’s father, Galen Smith, played college […]

Smith pours in 20 as Saint Louis edges Leilehua

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2017

Game one of the Sol Batoon era worked out quite well for the Saint Louis Crusaders. Jalen Smith scored 20 points, including a go-ahead layup with a minute left, as Saint Louis pulled out a 56-54 win over Leilehua on Wednesday afternoon at the James Alegre Invitational. The Mules trailed 26-25 at intermission, but the Crusaders used fullcourt pressure to spring a 10-1 run. Leilehua rallied late with six consecutive points by Liam Fitzgerald. Noah Park then hit a corner […]

Caravalho’s last-second shot lifts Honokaa over Radford

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2017

It has been a long road for Kolten Caravalho, but he isn’t alone. The Honokaa junior guard was ready when his number was called, and he banked a tough 12-footer in traffic at the buzzer to lead the Dragons to a 37-36 win over host Radford on Wednesday at James Alegre Invitational. He was bumped by a defender on the shot, which banged off the glass, off the rim, back off the glass and through as the buzzer sounded. Caravalho […]

By Paul Honda on November 27, 2017

It was an ILH-OIA showdown that turned out to be a runaway. Maryknoll looked like Golden State Lite on Monday night, hitting nine 3-pointers en route to a runaway 67-34 win over OIA powerhouse Kapolei at the Black and Gold Classic. Jaylen Cain had six of his 12 points in the first quarter, and Isiah Gelacio swished four treys for 12 points. The Spartans (5-0) had shown they could pound the ball inside earlier in the tournament, using size and […]

Coperning, Camacho lift Tigers over Jr. Bows

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

Down their most experienced player, the McKinley Tigers left nothing to chance. Caleb Coperning tied the game at 61 with a tough drive, and sophomore Frank Camacho‘s pull-up J in the lane gave the Tigers the lead for good with less than a minute left in a 63-61 win over University on Friday night in the Hawaii Self Storage McKinley Black and Gold Classic. With senior guard Kyle Moraga sidelined on Friday nights for personal reasons, the Tigers had to […]

Patient Hurricanes in evaluation mode

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2017

Gary Ellison has looked forward to this day for some time. Now, Ellison and his staff have some real data to work with. In their first nonconference game of the boys basketball season, the Kapolei Hurricanes got plenty of work done, right through the entire roster. Zoar Nedd scored 11 points in a 58-33 victory over OIA Division II contender Kalani on Saturday afternoon at the Hawaii Self Storage McKinley Black and Gold Classic. “The hustle was there, but we’ve […]
