Mausolf’s 3 lifts Punahou over Tesoro 44-41

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2017

Five years ago, Darren Matsuda heard the fire alarm. So did his entire Punahou team. The Buffanblu were in a California tournament, struggling with the Tesoro Titans. “They had 6-foot-6 3-point shooters,” Matsuda recalled. “But that fire alarm went off in the first half and woke up our team.” The Buffanblu rallied to beat Tesoro that night. Fast-forward a half-decade and Tesoro is a different team. This Tesoro led Punahou mid-game. The Titans led Punahou late. The Titans really played […]

Thursday hoops: A wild day all over Oahu

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2017

Kapolei at Mililani sounded like a game without a lot of pizazz. I was still interested, though, when the assignment came my way. How does Kapolei respond after a week of outstanding basketball? Mililani might not be at powerhouse form this year, but they’ll be scrappy, and they’ll be playing at home. Stranger things have happened. But to supplement my diet of hoops, I squeezed in a quarterfinal game at the Punahou Invitational. St. Francis against the mighty Cherokee of […]

Torres-Kahapea’s 42 lifts Kailua over Moanalua in OT

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2017

No, it’s not a typo. In fact, Everett Torres-Kahapea had no idea how many points he was scoring and scoring and scoring in Kailua’s clutch 84-80 overtime victory over Moanalua on Thursday night. The junior’s 42 points, a career high, was needed in every way by the Surfriders. Their versatile 6-foot-6 junior, Isaiah Hopson, left the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter. Lydell Romero stepped up. Moanalua kept bringing tough man-to-man defense, changing defenders on Torres-Kahapea. “My […]
