Despite adversity, Kalaheo upsets No. 5 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2018

All signs pointed to more Hurricane onslaught in the OIA. The Kapolei Hurricanes were healthy. Developing a now-rarely seen 3-2 matchup zone with 6-foot-4 Zoar Nedd at the top. Scoring and rebounding — and blocked shots – in good supply. They had no idea the Kalaheo Mustangs would match them play for play, and then some. In a stunning 56-53 semifinal win on Monday night, the Mustangs overcame every bit of adversity to advance to the championship game. Kalaheo (19-11 […]

ILH title comes down to winner-take-all final

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2018

On the hardwood, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu is treacherous place to be. Sleep for one minute and the natural hierarchy activates. The food chain is always at risk of shuffling. Victors reap the gold while those who nap are bumped aside. It is a perpetual state of chasing that flag at the top of the mountain even as your team takes every mental and physical wound imaginable. Maryknoll (25-5 overall) did just that, capturing the ILH regular-season title last […]

Maryknoll boys No. 1 for third week in a row

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2018

For the third week in a row, the Maryknoll Spartans are No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. The Spartans collected all 10 first-place votes from the panel of coaches and media. Maryknoll has earned an automatic state-tournament berth by winning the ILH regular season. They can win the league title outright with a win over No. 2 Punahou (25-3) tonight in the playoff tourney. St. Francis (26-3), which edged Maryknoll at the Punahou Invitational in December, remains […]

Late defense helps Kalaheo advance to OIA semis

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 2, 2018

With Kalaheo clinging to a two-point lead, Mustang junior Ryan Pardini’s first priority was to keep the ball away from Kaiser sharpshooter Hunter Dias. When Dias worked free enough to receive a pass, Pardini did the next best thing. Dias had already drained six 3-pointers, the last with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie Friday’s OIA Division I playoff game. Kalaheo regained the lead on Andrew Kearney’s drive 8 seconds later and the Mustangs figured Kaiser would […]

Hopson helps Kailua advance to OIA quarters

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 1, 2018

Kailua center Isaiah Hopson admittedly struggled during a four-game losing streak that left the Surfriders fifth in the OIA East standings entering the league playoffs. With the season on the line, the 6-foot-6 junior stepped up and stood tall indeed in Kailua’s 69-51 win over Aiea in Thursday’s opening-round elimination game in the OIA Division I boys basketball playoffs. “Tonight I wanted to redeem myself to my coach and prove that I can do better,” Hopson said after his 22-point […]

Maryknoll now unanimous No. 1

By Paul Honda on January 29, 2018

The musical chairs are more like an accordion of late, but Maryknoll has stood firm. The Spartans arrived at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 last week, and held on to their spot on Monday. Coaches and media voted Maryknoll (23-4) to the No. 1 position with all 10 first-place ballots. With the girls team on campus a season-long No. 1 in the other poll, Maryknoll has a No. 1 team in the boys and girls basketball […]

OIA boys basketball playoffs start Thursday

By Billy Hull on January 28, 2018

Defending OIA champion Kahuku will take a 26-game winning streak against OIA teams (regular season and playoffs only) into the league playoffs that begin Thursday. The Red Raiders (10-0) are the top seed out of the East and Kapolei (10-0) leads the way in the West. Kalaheo (7-3) earned the No. 2 seed from the East and a first-round bye while Leilehua, by virtue of a 52-37 win over Campbell in the regular season finale on Saturday, nabbed the other […]

Pupule ballot: The logic of Maryknoll’s ascent

By Paul Honda on January 26, 2018

Due to the hurricane of basketball games this week, no pun intended, this ballot hasn’t been published until now. Since the poll was released on Monday, Kapolei has gone on to claim first place in the OIA West. Also, Farrington and Moanalua meet on Saturday night with sixth place in the OIA East at stake. There are multiple tie scenarios involved. In other words, because this is the last game of the regular season, Moanalua (4-5) and Farrington (3-6) are […]
