Tourneys abound: St. Francis, Walter Wong, Kaimuki, ‘Iolani Classic

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2018

The holiday season is busy enough for shoppers and those of us driving in vehicles who aren’t shopping. Then there’s rain that slows all traffic to a crawl. Then there’s prep hoops. The onslaught of tournaments is upon us in full, thick morass. The Walter Wong Invitational tipped off on Monday with four games. Host Saint Louis is coming off a title run at the St. Joseph Cardinal Classic in Hilo. The Crusaders didn’t play on Monday, but Kaiser routed […]

Punahou up to No. 1; unbeaten Damien falls to No. 3

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2018

What a difference a week makes, no matter how perfect a team can be. Damien fell from the No. 1 spot to No. 3 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 today. The Monarchs are now 8-0 after winning their lone nonconference game of the week against Kapolei. Earlier, they posted stunning wins over Punahou, St. Francis and Kalaheo, winning the Damien Invitational and Pete Smith Classic along the way. The Monarchs declared for ILH Division II in June and […]

Shimamoto: Running Raiders could be running even more

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2018

In the aftermath of a 68-62 win over Kailua, ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto thought of one thing. The Running Raiders could do more. No. 4 ‘Iolani is now 5-0 in preseason action. The win over unranked Kailua is a gem worth building on. Kailua is putting together a strong nucleus — 6-foot-6 Isaiah Hopson did not play in last week’s loss to Baldwin — and was coming off a 68-63 win over No. 8 Kamehameha. Shimamoto knew it would be […]

No. 2 Buffanblu close out OIA-ILH Challenge 3-0

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2018

For one half, the Kailua Surfriders looked like everything Punahou coach Darren Matsuda had concerns about. Second-ranked Punahou (8-1 overall) didn’t let up, using constant pressure over 94 feet of hardwood to overwhelm Kailua 80-55 on the final day of the OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua High School. The Buffanblu completed the tourney 3-0, defeating Kapolei (71-41) on Thursday and No. 7 Kalaheo (81-79) on Friday. It was a much different story in the first half, when the Surfriders led most […]

No. 2 Punahou withstands 3-point barrage by No. 7 Kalaheo

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2018

For the late-night owls and insomniacs in the basketball universe, Friday night’s battle between No. 2 Punahou and No. 7 Kalaheo was an instant classic. Punahou finally had a full roster. No football visitation to the continent for hoops center/football lineman Duke Clemens, possessor of the Hakeem Olajuwon/Kevin McHale skill set. A healthy pair of elbows for swingman/linebacker Maninoa Tufono. Kaulana Makaula, a standout cornerback and five-position defensive whiz, also healthy (elbow). But the defending ILH and state champions got […]

Hoopbook: Namoa’s grit, Kordel Ng’s superpowers

By Paul Honda on December 7, 2018

The OIA-ILH Challenge is underway, but let’s go back nearly a week, please. On Saturday, the Konawaena Invitational concluded. Kalani completed a sweep of opponents with a 50-41 win over then-No. 4 Lahainaluna. The 3-0 run at Col. Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium began with a 66-54 win over host then-No. 2 Konawaena and a 60-51 victory over then-No. 7 Hilo. Maybe the highlight of the tournament was Thea Hanato-Smith‘s game-winning bucket to give the Alumni a 44-42 win over Konawaena’s varsity. […]

A Royal Debut: Damien Monarchs top boys Top 10

By Paul Honda on December 3, 2018

After all their early success, the Damien Monarchs still have their doubters. Division II Damien, unbeaten at 7-0, victorious over seven D-I teams including defending D-I state champion Punahou (last Monday), defending D-II state champ St. Francis and OIA D-I title contender Kalaheo (Pete Smith Classic final), is the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 today. It’s the first time Damien has been No. 1 in the boys hoops rankings since the first Star-Advertiser poll in […]
