VIDEO: Brothers Kameron and Kordel Ng are tough to stop

By Paul Honda on December 25, 2018

There have been many brother (and sister) duos in on the basketball court in Hawaii’s history, but how do Kameron and Kordel Ng of St. Francis compare? It’s still too early to really say, but the brothers are averaging a combined 44 points per game for No. 5-ranked St. Francis. If anything, Kameron Ng’s ankle injury provided a glimpse into what the Saints are like without their standout scorer. Kordel, known more for his defense and high-flying attacks on the […]

Punahou returns to No. 1, Saint Louis leaps to No. 6

By Paul Honda on December 24, 2018

Fickle they are, no question. “Fame,” Emily Dickinson once said, “is a fickle food upon a shifting plate.” Voters can be fickle, too. For a second time this early season, coaches and media have elected Punahou No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. The Buffanblu began the season at No. 2 after a loss to Damien. Punahou (15-1) climbed back to No. 1, only to fall back to the second spot behind ‘Iolani last week. Since then, the […]

La Lumiere’s Isaiah Stewart named ‘Iolani Classic MVP

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2018

Isaiah Stewart saved his best for last. The 6-foot-9 senior had 24 points and 13 rebounds, plus two blocks in La Lumiere’s 72-58 win over Oak Ridge (Fla.) on Saturday night. The Lakers’ rim protector is now the ‘Iolani Prep Classic most valuable player. “It feels great. It’s hard work paying off,” Stewart said, holding the MVP trophy. “It’ll go in my room. On my shelf or something. Oh yes, thank God for everything. Thank the man upstairs for this. […]

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2018

The drama on the final night of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic took an unusual twist this time. In the end, La Lumiere, from La Porte, Ind. hoisted the koa trophy. La Lumiere ran the table with a 4-0 mark to capture the Classic championship. The Lakers’ 72-58 win over Oak Ridge (Fla.) capped the run, but they had to wait for Sierra Canyon (Calif.) and Montverde (Fla.) to go to battle in the final game of the tourney. Montverde, which […]

La Lumiere completes undefeated run through ‘Iolani Classic

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2018

There was no denying these Lakers from La Lumiere, Ind. Especially their twin towers. Isaiah Stewart, their 6-foot-9 rim protector, scored 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, and 6-8 Keion Brooks added 17 points and six boards as No. 6 La Lumiere overpowered No. 20 Oak Ridge (Orlando, Fla.) 72-58 to claim at least part of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic championship on Saturday night. With the win, there was only a question of whether La Lumiere would be co-champion. […]

Low key, big hopes: Sierra Canyon ready for No. 1 Montverde

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2018

It doesn’t matter to the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers whether No. 1-ranked Montverde won or lost on Friday night. The Trailbazers, ranked No. 4 by MaxPreps, simply wanted a shot at the GEICO defending national champions. Point guard Scotty Pippen Jr. is as composed off the court as he is on. After 17 points and four assists in a 64-49 semifinal win over Westchester (Calif.), Pippen kept a bag of ice on his mouth. He took an elbow in the backcourt, […]

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2018

The final day is here, which is nice news for the hard-working volunteers here at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. For us fans and media, a bit sad. But we have eight good games ahead, and this has been one of those years when the matchups have been superb beyond Day 1. Saturday’s scores >> Mid-Pacific 53, Farrington 37, 15th place >> Roosevelt 46, Hawaii Prep, 13th place >> Moanalua 72, Campbell 42, 11th place >> St. Francis 68, Kailua 62, […]

No. 1 Montverde goes down, setting up unusual final day

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2018

There was only one way to upstage a Sierra Canyon (Calif.) team that is playing beautifully beastly basketball while featuring sons of two former NBA all-stars. Sierra Canyon’s 64-49 elimination win over a talented Westchester squad in the semifinal round of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic on Friday night was sterling. However, the highly unusual possibility surrounding La Lumiere became reality. The sixth-ranked Lakers, from La Porte, Ind., stunned No. 1 Montverde Academy, 58-51. The win was sensational. The Lakers opened […]
