Hoopbook: Parker stuns Kona, Kalaheo healthy again

By Paul Honda on January 4, 2019

From the outside, the basketball gym at Parker School is nondescript. A small structure as residents and passers-by blitz by on the highway. Thelma Parker Gym and the school campus are close to the town center at Waimea on the Big Island, a place where basketball culture comes and goes. With a small enrollment, Parker’s boys basketball team has a good season once in awhile. On Wednesday night, the Division II Bulls made it a memorable night. They matched their […]

St. Francis loses Kameron Ng to injury in loss to Maryknoll

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2019

Kelly Grant was less than pleased about his team’s defensive performance. No. 4 Maryknoll welcomed No. 5 St. Francis to Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I boys basketball with a 65-52 win over the Saints in Manoa on Thursday night. The Spartans were efficient offensively with 49-percent field-goal shooting (24-for-49), decent enough at the free-throw line (12-for-19, 63 percent) and persistent on the offensive glass with 11 second chances. Marcus Tobin’s expanded range wasn’t necessary as he continually scored in […]

About that ILH boys hoops playoff scenario…

By Paul Honda on January 2, 2019

With St. Francis moving up from Division II to D-I, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu now has three berths in the D-I state championships. It’s a godsend for a league that has long been underrepresented in terms of quality programs. Often enough, there are four to five Top 10 teams in ILH D-I, and only two teams permitted to represent the league at the state tourney because of the HHSAA by-laws, which follow a mathematical formula for each league’s participation. […]

Punahou holds down No. 1, Kahuku boys return to poll

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2018

Punahou garnered nine out of 10 first-place votes to become the first team this season to hold down the No. 1 spot for a second week in a row. Unlike some ILH teams that traveled, the Buffanblu (15-1, 0-0) were idle from game action last week. They open league play on Thursday against Mid-Pacific, one of four consecutive road games to start the regular season. ‘Iolani (9-4, 0-0 ILH) remains at No. 2 after a busy week at The Classic […]

Raefe McEnroe leads Farrington upset of Moanalua

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2018

The Farrington Governors are doing it quietly and effectively. The Govs shot 76 percent from the free-throw line and got a monster game from Raefe McEnroe — 16 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and four blocks — in a stunning 59-55 win over No. 7 Moanalua on Friday night. It was a loud audience at Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse with roughly one-third of them cheering for the visiting Na Menehune. The visitors’ decibel level was as high as the home crowd’s […]

Hoopbook: ‘Iolani clutches up, Lunas upset #5 St. Francis

By Paul Honda on December 28, 2018

The landscape for girls hoops in the islands has been altered for the 2018-19 season, and it hasn’t been ‘Iolani doing the most disruption. The Raiders have been No. 1 each week in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10, but the noise in the poll also comes from several teams that are ranked above three-time defending state champion Konawaena. Mainland mania If you have not seen it yet, the game-winning shot, a 3-point buzzer-beater by guard Noah Bumanglag to cap […]

VIDEO: No. 5 St. Francis vs. Kailua, ‘Iolani Classic

By Paul Honda on December 27, 2018

This matchup was the second between two high-scoring teams, No. 5 St. Francis and Kailua. Unlike the first game, won by St. Francis 87-79 in two overtimes, the Saints had a (semi) healthy Kameron Ng for a full game. The senior finished this game with 30 points as the Saints prevailed 68-62.
