Hoopbook: Kamehameha, Maryknoll in an elite class — for now

By Paul Honda on January 16, 2020

The week is far from over, but WOW, things in prep hoops have been wild and wooly again. Namely, Kahuku and Saint Louis. There are a few teams that are playing their best basketball right now, and Kahuku — unranked for much of the season — is suddenly a state-championship contender. See and learn, fellow hoopaholics. The Red Raiders have knocked off then-No. 9 Moanalua, and on Wednesday night, they went to Pete Smith Court and stunned No. 3 Kalaheo […]

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2020

There are teams that are playing their tails off across the state, but the change in efficiency — and success — is most prevalent for Big Red. Kahuku continued its sterling ascent on Wednesday night with a come-from-behind 63-53 overtime win over No. 3 Kalaheo at the Mustangs’ gym. Kahuku’s win leaves each team at 5-1 in the OIA East. >> CLICK HERE FOR A PHOTO GALLERY FROM THE GAME It was a balanced attack and a stingy defense, a […]

Kamehameha ascends to No. 1 in Boys Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2020

A lot can happen in one year, especially for the Kamehameha Warriors. The Warriors collected all 10 first-place votes today as a unanimous No. 1 choice by coaches and media in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. “Our players deserve all the credit,” Kamehameha coach Larry Park said. “They support each other so well, but the ILH is so tough. We got Punahou tomorrow, then Saint Louis and Mid-Pacific, then ‘Iolani on Monday. All very well-coached and each poses a […]

Methodical, top-ranked Maryknoll boys hand Punahou first ILH loss

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2020

This is precisely why the Maryknoll Spartans are in no rush. Three games in a five-day span, all against Top 10 competition. A relatively young and thin bench. A sophomore center/forward/shooting guard. Coach Kelly Grant’s Spartans are content to walk the ball up the court, execute their offensive sets and, most importantly, get high-percentage shots in crunch time. That was the case on Saturday night in a key 44-32 win over No. 5 Punahou. The Buffanblu had cut a 14-point […]

Move up to Division I getting a little bumpy for No. 3 Damien

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2020

The transition to Division I isn’t that tough for Damien. The Monarchs won the D-II state title last year with a team that was ranked in the Top 5 from beginning to end. One of their wins was a in a preseason tilt with eventual D-I state champion Maryknoll. Right now, though, the road is bumpy. After three games in the state’s toughest D-I boys basketball league, the Monarchs are 1-2 and not happy at all. A 61-56 loss at […]

Kordel Ng leads No. 2 Kamehameha over No. 1 Maryknoll

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2020

Kordel Ng scored 16 points, including a free throw with 5.4 seconds left, as No. 2 Kamehameha edged No. 1 Maryknoll 46-43 on Tuesday night at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. After Ng’s free throw, Maryknoll advanced the ball to halfcourt, using two time outs. With 2.5 seconds left, inbounds passer Justin Yap misfired as Sage Tolentino, their 7-footer, waited for the ball. Kamehameha dribbled out the final ticks on the clock. “I feel good. Right now, our finishing is a little suspect. […]

Upset win over Moanalua lands Kahuku in Boys Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2020

Maryknoll remains on the throne while Kahuku lands in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 for the first time this season. Maryknoll (18-1, 2-0) received all 10 first-place ballots for a second week in a row. The Spartans edged ‘Iolani and Mid-Pacific to open ILH regular-season play. Kahuku got a boost with the return of Robbie Sauvao, a 6-foot-3 senior. Sauvao’s versatile skill set helped the Red Raiders surprise Moanalua, 63-60, on Thursday.
