By Paul Honda on February 8, 2020

The monarchy is intact. Damien made certain of it, withstanding a major rally by Mid-Pacific for a 58-54 win to secure a state-tournament berth on Saturday afternoon in a near-capacity Bishop Scanlan Gymnasium. The Monarchs will meet Maryknoll on Monday in their next step up the staircase format of the ILH’s second-round tournament. The Damien-Maryknoll winner will meet Kamehameha, the regular-season first-place team, for the league title on Wednesday. “After we lost on senior night, this was a good team […]

Mid-Pacific’s shocking OT win eliminates Punahou from states, moves Owls 1 game away

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

The kookiness, zaniness and flat-out heartbreak is real across the state this week — just ask Punahou and Waiakea. Konawaena, the fourth-place team in the BIIF, stunned first-place Waiakea 66-50 on Tuesday, eliminating the Warriors from title and state-berth contention. Waiakea was 10-1 during the regular season, but had no protection, and the playoff games were played at Kealakehe. Konawaena then lost to Kamehameha-Hawaii, which had earlier knocked Hilo out. KS-Hawaii and Konawaena will represent the BIIF at the D-I […]

This season of OIA boys basketball was the superhero with a big question mark on his chest. Who? What? Really? The OIA playoff brackets were released on Friday morning and here’s a look at what was, what is and what could be. East boss Kalaheo is in the same sub-bracket with West 2 Mililani, which lost to Leilehua 50-49 in a Thursday thriller to end the regular season. Also in the sub-bracket: Kapolei, Kailua, Moanalua and Campbell. Between these six […]

Seven teams in new spots in this week’s Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2020

The crescendo is at fever pitch in Hawaii boys basketball. With the playoffs about to tip off, 18 teams received votes in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 this week, the most all season. The panel of coaches and media had no issues with Kamehameha as a unanimous No. 1 today’s rankings, but the turbulence of the late regular season has seven teams in new spots. That includes Kaiser, which returned to the Top 10 at No. 9 following a stunning 41-40 […]

Kohala edges Waiakea, loses to HPA in wild BIIF week

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2020

The most predictable thing about the BIIF boys basketball race is that it is… unpredictable. The game of musical chairs continued on Saturday as Kohala stunned Waiakea 44-41 at Hisaoka Gymnasium. O’shen Cazimero pumped in 18 points and Jeffery Francisco tallied nine for the Cowboys in a game that had been originally scheduled two weeks ago. Weather conditions and a leaky roof at Hisaoka forced the postponement, but only whetted the appetite of Kohala’s fans. “The crowd was crazy,” Kohala […]

Adversity returns as Damien falls to Maryknoll without PG Hayden Bayudan

By Paul Honda on February 1, 2020

The first time Maryknoll and Damien met, the visiting Spartans had to scrap for every board and bucket en route to a rugged 44-40 win on Jan. 16 at Bishop Scanlan Gymnasium. Fifteen days later, on Friday night, Damien visited Maryknoll and, again, lost by the same margin in a 45-41 loss at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium. Maryknoll (25-3, 9-2 ILH) clinched a state-tourney berth with the win. For Damien (15-13, 6-6), a major difference was the void left behind […]

By Billy Hull on January 31, 2020

The final day of the OIA boys basketball regular season on Thursday shook up the league playoff bracket. Leilehua’s 50-49 victory over Mililani gave the Mules the No. 1 seed in the West with the previously undefeated Trojans dropping to the No. 2 seed. Both will receive a first-round bye and open their playoffs in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. In the East, Kahuku needed a win to lock up the No. 1 seed, but lost to Kaiser, giving Kalaheo the […]
