Farrington loses two premier players

By Jerry Campany on December 1, 2011

A pre-game note: Farrington coach Allan Silva said two of last year’s starters, J.P. Saycon and Ryan Reyes will not play this season. Saycon, the high-soaring dunker who was a Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 selection, had surgery on his knee recently and will be sidelined for a year. He is a senior. He played some basketball in the offseason, but the injury had lingered since his junior year and he played last season through the pain. Reyes, arguably the best […]

Then there were two

By Paul Honda on February 19, 2011

The long shots have bowed out gracefully. • AOP, with its hearty leader (Micah Dunhour) and stalwart role players, was amazing for two nights. But the cumulative effect of those difficult wins over Roosevelt and Moanalua took a toll. Kamehameha was simply too fresh, too accurate and too good last night. • Kamehameha-Hawaii has the misfortune of drawing Kamehameha in the quarterfinal. It’s always difficult to win at states, more so when your opponent shares a strength. KS-Kapalama saw on-ball, […]

If peak performance was so common…

By Paul Honda on February 18, 2011

… why don’t we see it all the time, right? I’ve been in a vacuum of sorts during the Hawaii high school version of March Madness, a.k.a. the Big Dance. While No. 1 seed ‘Iolani established its domain at one site (McKinley Student Council Gym), I’ve witnessed the prowess of Kamehameha and Academy of the Pacific at Farrington’s Richard Kitamura Memorial Fieldhouse. Prowess. Peak performance. Kamehameha did not enjoy coming in second last year. After winning the state crown in […]

• Gauntlet in Kalihi. The Farrington bracket is intriguing, and not just because five of the six entries are ranked in the Top 10.

Tiny AOP enjoys playing with big boys (extended version)

By Paul Honda on January 25, 2011

(Here’s the extended version of today’s feature story on Academy of Pacific’s basketball team.) When Walter Marciel gets steamed up, his whole team can’t help but notice. Marciel, the first-year boys basketball head coach at Academy of the Pacific, spends of his game nights patrolling the sideline in front of his bench. Between encouraging his Dolphins and barking instructions, Marciel also gets in some aerobic activity — none of it planned. It only happens when a big play or call […]
