Eyes follow Maryknoll’s gentle giant

By Paul Honda on February 19, 2013

(Here’s the extended version of today’s prep sports feature story on Maryknoll basketball player Tobias Schramm.) Everywhere he goes, eyeballs follow. Especially at Maryknoll School, where pre-teen tykes have gotten used to the sight of 6-foot-9 Tobias Schramm. His calm demeanor and easy smile make him a magnet for many of the youngsters. “He’s friendly. Toby gets along with all the kids,” literature teacher Sheila Worley said. “The little kids that go up to him, they call him and he […]

Always a good time for Sweet 16

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2013

It is 2013. We basketball fans are one year removed from the Lia Galdeira/Dawnyelle Awa empire (three state titles in four years). We are three years removed from Lahainaluna’s first state crown and megatronic guard Maiki Viela. A few extra tidbits and notes on two of yesterday’s games: No. 1 Maryknoll’s 15-13 (no typo) win over No. 4 ‘Iolani (boys) and Kaimuki’s playoff upset of No. 4 Roosevelt (girls). A lot of fans, including folks who rarely attend a high school game, had plenty to say on talk radio this morning. Scott Robbs gave me a call and we chatted on air. I just had two points to make: 1) It was a superb game plan by […]
