Pupule’s ballot: boys hoops 2/10

By Paul Honda on February 12, 2014

Pupule’s Top 10 ballot BKB 2/10/14 1. FAR (22-4) 2. MS (22-3) 3. IOL (17-7) 4. PUN (21-4) 5. KS (18-9) 6. BAL (19-3) 7. HPA (15-3) 8. KLH (24-7) 9. KON (19-4) 10. STF (17-11) First, a disclaimer. My ballot is not scientific. I use head-to-head play as a primary criteria, but after Team A beats Team B which beats Team C, then Team C beats Team A… well, it becomes a bunch of guesses. So, if you have […]

Roundball wrap 2/8

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2014

What a day and night it’s been here at good ol’ Neal Blaisdell Arena — and elsewhere — in the world of Hawaii girls high school basketball. Here, the D-I quartefinals doubleheader was a mixed bag. King Kekaulike was out of gas in its 62-34 loss to No. 3 seed Punahou. King K played with energy and verve in its comeback win over Moanalua — Na Alii rallied from a 17-point deficit — on Friday. Tonight, it was all Punahou […]

Texas Tech makes offer to Ulu-Perry

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2014

Signing day for football seniors has passed, but there’s no break for recruiters and athletes in the class of 2015. Texas Tech made that clear on Tuesday with a scholarship offer to Saint Louis All-State left tackle Fred Ulu-Perry. Texas Tech fan site 247Sports.com posted the news. The junior is one of the more intriguing athletes in the state, a 6-foot-2, 310-pound athlete with raw strength and nimble feet. He shows that unique agility on the basketball court for the […]

Referees have feelings, too

By Paul Honda on January 29, 2014

I was 16 when I was asked to coach my little brother’s 12-under team at Boys Club of Honolulu (now known as Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu). That was fun. Strange, different and fun. A few years later, while I was in college, a friend who coached in the ILH asked me to help as a referee in the summer intermediate league. I had no experience, but I knew the rules well enough. That got me to the title […]

You may think, yes, Pupule has truly gone mad. But it’s not true at all. I […]

LIVE BLOG: #1 Punahou at #7 Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on January 24, 2014

Punahou 10, Kamehameha 8, end Q1 Both teams applying tight defensive pressure. Kamehameha using a 2-1-2 halfcourt press, not real tight but enough to slow Punahou’s fastbreak. Punahou 23, Kamehameha 20, halftime The Buffablu got nice shooting from Dayson Watanabe to open a 10-point lead, but let it slip. Kamehameha’s patient halfcourt offense is making Punahou’s man defense work. Noa Kinimaka sank a 23-foot trey from the top just before the half. Kamehameha 39, Punahou 34, end Q3 Strong defensive […]
