Transfers boost Maryknoll, Kalaheo, Farrington

By Paul Honda on November 25, 2014

(A shorter version of this story ran in this morning’s Star-Advertiser.) The parking lot at Maryknoll was busy, as usual, on Monday morning. Cars pulling in, kids stepping off, rain falling to the pavement. Teacher and boys basketball coach Kelly Grant remembers a time when rain meant a wet asphalt court unless then-coach Tony Sellitto found a solution. Which was, in an era without cellphones and texting, easier said than done. “Sellitto had connections, so on rainy days, he’d call […]

The ADs also announced that Chris Hoe is the new head coach of the Saints girls basketball team. Last season, Durant led Kamehameha II to a 5-4 record and a third-place finish in ILH Division I-AA. Durant succeeds Sol Batoon, who coached the Saints through most of their first four seasons in varsity play. […]

Some folks actually asked me detailed questions about the All-State picks a week, two weeks ago, thinking that we published ours already. But no, our boys and girls basketball selections — voted on by coaches and media — will be released on Sunday morning. Some people actually thought our picks […]

LIVE BLOG: Senior Basketball Classic

By Paul Honda on March 2, 2014

The inaugural Geremy Robinson Senior Basketball Classic is 2 minutes from tip-off. The girls play first, followed by the boys. Technically, they can’t call it ILH vs. OIA, but that’s how the teams are comprised. There’s going to be a slam dunk competition, plus 3-point shootouts. Might be an interesting afternoon/evening of roundball here at Moanalua High School. The concession stand isn’t open yet, but I hear they’re working on brownie plates. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students. […]
