Kohala fixes damage, saves game

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2015

The Kohala community and its high school team know a thing or two about the wreckage Mother Nature can leave behind. For years, it’s biggest basketball facility, Hisaoka Gymnasium at Kamehameha Park, was shut down after an earthquake shook the region. This weekend, high winds damaged the power lines that feed the facility, putting a much anticipated senior-night game with Honokaa in jeopardy. Saturday’s game was postponed to Monday, but the damage required a move to the Kohala High School […]

By Nick Abramo on February 7, 2015

Kahuku has all the parts and now that the OIA playoffs are a week away, the Red Raiders’ job is to do the finishing work on their boys basketball product. They’ve got smooth guards (Tamamoko Green, Samuta Avea, Keanu Akina, Alohi Gilman). They’ve got shooters and creative drivers (Harris, Akina, Tamanui Nagy, Brooke, Anae). They’re deep and they come at you […]

Owls support Swanson ohana

By Curtis Murayama on February 6, 2015

Tuesday will be more than just a game for the Mid-Pacific boys basketball team. Much much more. It’ll be senior aloha night, sure, but what will make this game special, meaningful and emotional will be the return of a player who saw the lives of his family, especially his father, get turned cruelly upside down and inside out in just a few short months. Senior Ben Swanson will fly back from Minnesota to participate in the 5 p.m. game at […]

Like fathers, like sons (extended)

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2015

(This is the long version of this morning’s story in the Star-Advertiser. Click here for the subscriber story and photos.) It’s a family thing at Kalaheo. Before Alika Smith had won a single game as a head coach at his alma mater, game had recognized game. After going 24-4 as Punahou’s coach, Smith stepped down. Soon after that, he landed at his alma mater. Immediately, then-sophomore guard Josh Ko followed his coach to the Windward side. Kalaheo beat McKinley 57-42 […]
