Kahuku evades motivated Moanalua

By Nick Abramo on February 25, 2015

Moanalua came really, really close to knocking off Kahuku on Wednesday night. Na Menehune led by nine points at one point before the Red Raiders — feared as a legitimate state-title contender — whittled away that advantage and took over for a 49-48 win in the first round of the boys basketball state tournament at Moanalua’s gym. It would have ranked as a huge upset if Na Menehune (8-8) prevailed over the Red Raiders (13-2). Had Kahuku’s Keanu Akina not […]

Underdogs, pumpkins and broken dreams

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2015

Cinderella knocked on the door, but she never entered tonight’s games after all. In both opening-round games at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium on Wednesday, underdogs had favorites on the ropes. In both matchups, it looked very much like Kamehameha-Hawaii had a real shot to knock out Campbell, and Leilehua had a chance to put ILH runner-up ‘Iolani away. Instead, Campbell, the OIA’s fifth-place team, rallied from a 30-26 deficit for a 42-34 win. The senior-heavy team found a way to […]

Elimination Zone: Casing the Big Dance

By Paul Honda on February 24, 2015

It’s the law of averages, expect the unexpected, counter-intuition. However fans look at this year’s boys basketball state championships — an up in the cycle of parity and non-parity, the possibility of myriad close games or the surprise of lopsided scores — just about every coach I’ve talked with marvels at the balance in power this season. New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships Seeded teams 1. Punahou (23-3, 11-1 ILH) Sure, Punahou is seeded first and has […]

HHSAA handbook spells out pairing procedures

By Nick Abramo on February 23, 2015

This does not make for exciting reading, but it does explain why the HHSAA seeds teams the way it does for tournaments. In the recent girls soccer tournament, and now, for the released pairings of the upcoming boys basketball tournament, there seemed to be some oddities, leaving people wondering if there was some fiddling going on. Copies of the seeding/pairings procedures are available in a coaches information packet given to school representatives at the tournament’s coaches meetings. The coaches information […]

‘Group of death’: Punahou, Kalaheo, Kahuku

By Paul Honda on February 22, 2015

DIVISION I DIVISION II As expected, ILH champion Punahou is the top seed for the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships. Punahou is in the same bracket with Konawaena, which was seeded fourth after defeating Kamehameha-Hawaii on Saturday night to capture the BIIF D-I title. Farrington, the OIA champion, is seeded second and is in the same bracket with MIL champion Lahainaluna, the third seed. The seedings and pairings went through a very different look after Farrington […]

State boys basketball brackets

By Jerry Campany on February 21, 2015

You can call it the group of death. Punahou, Kalaheo and Kahuku are all in the same half of the bracket in the state boys basketball tournament beginning next week. The Buffanblu received the top seed and will play the winner between Maui and Kalaheo. Konawaena got the fourth seed and gets the winner between Kahuku and Moanalua. As strong as the top half is, the bottom is set up for a surprise. Kamehameha-Hawaii and Campbell play for the right […]

Govs, Buffs and tangled webs

By Paul Honda on February 21, 2015

Near and far, prep hoops fans are bracing for what could be the most debatable seedings and, more so, pairings, in boys state-tournament history. After all, from the start, it’s been a season of parity. The Star-Advertiser Top 10 has been in shake-up mode from Week 1. Even this week, while No. 1 Kalaheo went down, No. 2 Kahuku appeared to be prime for a move to the top spot for the first time this winter. Instead, Farrington toppled another […]
