More on Kailua’s opening-round win

By Jerry Campany on May 6, 2010

Kailua outlasted Kaiser 6-1 in Wednesday’s opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Baseball Championships at Maehara Stadium on Maui. Here’s more on the Surfriders’ win. Ryan McMonigle’s one mistake, a hanging curve, left the part courtesy of Kaiser slugger Kaipo Oamiloa-Scholtz. That homer pulled the Cougars within 2-1, but they couldn’t put together enough hits the rest of the way. “I’m not going to blow it past anyone,” McMonigle said. “We have a good ‘D,’ so […]

Windy Wednesday and Twisty Thursday

By Jerry Campany on May 6, 2010

Wednesday’s opening-round action at the Wally Yonamine/HHSAA Division I was as breezy as expected at Ichiro “Iron” Maehara Stadium. Wind blows in from right field (shore) to home plate at times, knocking down bloopers hit that way. Wind also will go cross from right to left field. Yesterday, bloopers fell quickly in right. Several of his players echoed the same sentiment about their new coach: he’s all about discipline. When I visited him for a quick chat a month ago, the Crusaders had just gotten past Kamehameha 8-6 in a bittersweet win for […]

Punahou over Maryknoll and more

By Jerry Campany on March 22, 2010

Here’s a capsule story on Punahou’s win over Maryknoll on Saturday, including some notes about the Buffanblu-Saint Louis game won by the Crusaders on Friday. Punahou 14, Maryknoll 3, 5 innings — Rick Nomura, Ryan Yamane and Matthew Barrett-Wright drilled homers as the top-ranked Buffanblu bounced back from Friday’s loss to Saint Louis. Nomura and Yamane had two-run homers in the first inning, both splashing into the Ala Wai Canal beyond the right-field fence. The Buffanblu also had run-scoring triples […]
