By Billy Hull on May 14, 2014

Pono Anderson went out Tuesday and pitched the game he needed. Ryder Kuhns and company provided more than enough offense. The Crusaders took care of business in a timely fashion, routing Roosevelt 13-0 in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships to set up the showdown everybody wanted as soon as the brackets were released. Saint Louis, which has spent most of the season ranked as one of the top three teams in the state, faces […]

LIVE BLOG: Mid-Pacific vs. Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on May 7, 2014

The ILH baseball championship is at stake in this afternoon’s matchup at ‘Iolani School field. Weather is fairly good: hazy (voggy?) sky, trades 5-10 mph. Not very humid at all, and though there are gray clouds near the valley, I don’t think it’s going to rain. Yet. Saint Louis (14-5) won the regular-season title and Mid-Pacific (14-3-1) won the double-elimination tournament to set up this final. The game was originally scheduled for Monday, but was pushed back to today (Wednesday). […]

LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis vs. MPI

By Paul Honda on May 1, 2014

Another gorgeous afternoon for baseball. Mostly blue sky, just a few white puffs above, trades 5-15 mph here at Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. Traffic was moderate getting out here from town between 2:15 and 3 p.m. This is the time of day when I enjoy the CORP grounds most. After 7 p.m., it can be wet (constant mist), windy and kind of cold. And the restroom is a 5-minute walk away, not good for those of us keeping […]

By Paul Honda on April 30, 2014

(Here’s the long version of what ran in this morning’s Star-Advertiser.) For the ‘Iolani Raiders, the fourth time was the charm. After losing to Kamehameha three times during the regular season, the Raiders ousted the Warriors 7-3 on Tuesday to stay alive in the ILH baseball double-elimination tournament. ‘Iolani, with one loss in the tourney, will meet Saint Louis today at Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park in another elimination game. At Mid-Pacific’s Damon Field, the Raiders (10-8) came through […]

Hopes for an ILH title and state-tournament berth are on the line for the Kamehameha Warriors and ‘Iolani Raiders this afternoon at Mid-Pacific’s Damon Field. Weather is picture perfect: Sunny, almost cloudless sky above, gentle trades 5-10 mph. The winner stays alive in the ILH’s double-elimination tournament. The loser is done for the year. Kamehameha has beaten ‘Iolani three times in three games during regular-season play. On the mound: Caleb Duhay of ‘Iolani against Keenan Lum of Kamehameha. Live updates […]

Beautiful morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki on signing day for dozens of student-athletes from the islands. The senior signed with Oregon as a preferred walk-on, turning down several opportunities at smaller schools. Isaac Hurd, Campbell’s big-play quarterback, signed with Southern Oregon. Among the other notable signees are Sarah Liva, Mililani’s all-state basketball player, who signed with Portland State. Punahou’s three-sport standout, Keau Fey, […]
