LIVE BLOG: MPI 4, STL 1, F

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2015

It’s a gorgeous, hot afternoon in Manoa Valley for another gauntlet showdown in the ILH. No. 4-ranked Saint Louis visits No. 1 Mid-Pacific. (Note: By the time Tuesday morning rolls around, we’ll have a new Baseball Top 10 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Until then, these teams are fourth and first.) The starting pitchers are Dawson Yamaguchi for Saint Louis and Grant Doi for Mid-Pacific. First inning The Crusaders get a one-out double by Taylor Meilleur, but he’s left stranded at […]

‘Matt the bat’ invigorates new Hanalani team

By Nick Abramo on March 14, 2015

The player known as “Matt the bat” came to the plate with the bases loaded and his teammates and the fans shouting his nickname. Matt Tsutsui is his real name and he promptly knocked the baseball over Damien center fielder Christian Capinia’s head for a three-run triple. It gave Hanalani — a small private school in Mililani playing its first year of high school baseball — a 3-0 lead Friday in its third-regular season game. Although the Royals ended up […]

LIVE BLOG: Kamehameha 5, MPI 2, F

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2015

Occasional showers have departed Manoa Valley in favor of perfect conditions. No. 6 Kamehameha (1-0 ILH) visits No. 1 Mid-Pacific (1-0 ILH). First inning The Warriors get their leadoff man, Kahoea Akau, on base with a single, but the next batter grounds into a 6-4-3 double play. Steady inning for Chase Wago, all strikes. Tyler Yamaguchi leads of the Owls’ bottom half of the inning with a walk on four pitches off Kamehameha pitcher Joshua Souza. After a fielder’s choice […]

KS-Hawaii’s new diamond: ‘Best in state’

By Paul Honda on March 10, 2015

Forgive Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball coach Andrew Correa if he’s a bit jacked up about the Warriors’ new field. After years of dealing with East Hawaii’s heavy precipitation, the Warriors now have a drainage system and artificial turf. “It’s the best in the state,” Correa e-mailed on Monday. “And it doesn’t flood.” The new field is all AstroTurf, and if that sounds familiar, it’s very similar to the same product that covered the field at Aloha Stadium for decades. “AstroTurf product works […]

Kamehameha overcomes “jitters,” bests ‘Iolani

By Kyle Galdeira on March 8, 2015

It took Kamehameha an inning to overcome what Warriors starting pitcher Codie Paiva called “first-game jitters,” but the blue-and-white clad squad used a seven-hit, seven-run outburst in the fifth inning to best ‘Iolani, 9-4, Saturday morning at Hans L’Orange Park. Paiva, a six-foot, five-inch hurler, notched the victory after striking out six in as many innings. The senior also served as a catalyst at the dish, collecting two crucial doubles that allowed Kamehameha to erase a 2-0 first-inning deficit before it eventually […]

UH signees Anderson, Winchester square off

By Billy Hull on March 8, 2015

The ILH baseball season is going to be fun to watch this season, especially if you’re a University of Hawaii baseball fan. Saint Louis right-hander Pono Anderson, ‘Iolani third baseman Pikai Winchester and Kamehameha catcher Kekai Rios have all signed to play at UH next season. They will be teammates next fall, but for now will go head-to-head with each other on a weekly basis. Winchester and Anderson got after it on Friday night in the ILH opener for both […]

Campbell’s Kahaloa draws crowd of scouts

By Nick Abramo on March 5, 2015

You would figure a season-opening OIA baseball game would just be another game. But it wasn’t. Not with Ian Kahaloa pitching for Campbell. Not with four major league scouts at the park. After the game, at an 8-0 Campbell win over Waianae on Thursday in Ewa Beach, Sabers coach Rory Pico mentioned that the scouts — more than just the four — come to practice to watch Kahaloa. Some even went to Maui to watch some preseason games. The right-hander, […]

Baldwin pitcher shuts down Saint Louis

By Jerry Campany on February 28, 2015

The state tournament is a long way away, but forgive defending champion Saint Louis if it does all it can to avoid Baldwin when it does roll around. Baldwin’s Michael Hooper limited the Crusaders to one run in a 3-1 win on Friday, yielding only six hits and striking out four. He wore out Saint Louis pitching as well, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Dawson Yamaguchi took the damage for Saint Louis. Campbell did its share of […]
