Pearl City product is the baseball coach now

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2015

Gavin Concepcion is at ease on the baseball field, and in speaking with him on the Pearl City grass Friday, that peacefulness is not just because his Chargers had just defeated No. 1 Mililani 4-3. Concepcion, in his first year at the helm, talked about how the game of baseball gave his team one (yes, the Chargers took advantage of three Trojans errors in the bottom of the seventh to score three times for the win) and how next time […]

A scout’s perspective of Campbell’s Kahaloa

By Nick Abramo on April 7, 2015

By now, most Hawaii high school baseball fans know that Campbell right-hander Ian Kahaloa is being scouted by all 30 major league teams. The senior has been close to unhittable so far this season, and there’s been plenty of talk about his prospects at the next level. Most of the scouts who have filled the press boxes with their radar guns at the various OIA West fields to see Kahaloa have been told by their teams to not speak with […]

D-II new for Kapolei, same-ol’ for Waialua

By Nick Abramo on April 7, 2015

Kapolei is getting used to a different level of baseball. Waialua is constantly working year in and year out just to keep a baseball team on the field. Metropolitan Kapolei does not need to look very hard to find players. In agriculturally based Waialua, sometimes players are few and far between. After the Hurricanes defeated the Bulldogs 14-3 on Saturday, the head coaches of the two teams had differing perspectives, too. “It’s all about developing for us,” said Waialua coach […]

Leilehua’s Watanuki circles the career bases

By Nick Abramo on April 3, 2015

When people find out Lane Watanuki teaches at Campbell and coaches baseball at Leilehua, they don’t know if he’s a traitor or not. Many people ask him how something like that could have happened, and he gives a simple answer. But, no matter what, he’ll continue to get the question when new people learn of his circumstance. Watanuki was Campbell’s baseball coach for 20 years. Before that, he grew up in Haleiwa and went to Waialua High School, and he […]

Hot free ticket: Kahaloa pitches Saturday!!!

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2015

Sam Delos Reyes has been at a lot of big games recently. The Campbell athletic director watched the Sabers football team just miss making the state Division I tournament, and then saw the boys basketball team lose by just two points, 29-27, in the state D-I semifinals. Delos Reyes was there on Friday night at Central Oahu Regional Park to watch the Campbell softball team deliver an 11-1 victory over Kapolei. That win was a bounce-back effort for the Sabers, […]
