‘Iolani’s Campos to play baseball at USF

By Nick Abramo on March 9, 2016

‘Iolani shortstop Matt Campos made a bunch of clean plays at shortstop on Wednesday in a 10-3 win at home over Kamehameha. He had seven assists and two putouts, including a running catch of a sharp liner to his right for the final out of the game. There was one bad play by Campos — and that can easily happen to any shortstop. He threw low to first on a sixth-inning grounder by Makoa Mau, who reached on the error. During […]

Zalewski, Falcons walk off against Kailua

By Billy Hull on March 9, 2016

On one hand, Kalani coach Shannon Hirai can’t help to play the “what-if” game. With the addition of senior Connor Zalewski, a transfer from Mid-Pacific who has signed to play for the University of Hawaii next year, Hirai had a legitimate 1-2 punch at the top of his rotation with Zalewski and Reece Kakugawa, the Falcons’ ace from last season. Unfortunately Kakugawa is dealing with an arm injury that may prevent him from throwing the entire season. On the flip […]

Perkins on No. 1 ranking: ‘I’m not telling them’

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2016

Kamehameha coach Tommy Perkins is a longtime guru, a lifer on the diamond. He knows the perils of too much attention, too early, too over the top. But the top is precisely where his baseball team is today. After wondrous wins over then-No. 3 Saint Louis and then-No. 1 Mid-Pacific, the Warriors have catapulted to the No. 1 spot in today’s Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. Rankings change with the trade winds, no doubt. Kamehameha was tied for sixth in last […]

Wago the Craftsman

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2016

Dunn Muramaru knows his numbers, and he knows Chase Wago likes numbers, too. Muramaru, the longtime baseball coach at powerhouse Mid-Pacific, teaches math at the school. Seventh-grade math. Wago, a senior ace, lists mathematics as his favorite subject. He’s even taking AP Calculus and calls math in general, “fun.” Wago, according to Muramaru, hardly says a word. That’s just fine with Muramaru, one of the finest teachers on and off the field in Hawaii prep baseball history. “Coach Dunn, he […]

UPDATE: #3 STL 4, #1 MPI 3, F

By Paul Honda on March 5, 2016

It’s a beautiful, hot and sunny afternoon in Manoa for Saint Louis-versus-Mid-Pacific in ILH baseball. Each team is 1-1 in league play. ILH boys basketball was quite the gauntlet recently. Baseball looks like much the same. MPI has lefty Alex Oley on the mound against STL southpaw — and it’s a true southpaw here at Damon Field — Dawson Yamaguchi. MPI 1, STL 0 The Owls score in the bottom of the third inning after Hunter Hill’s long drive to […]

UPDATE: #1 MPI 3, #4 PUN 2, F (9 inn)

By Paul Honda on March 2, 2016

It’s Mid-Pacific ace Chase Wago against Punahou ace Noah Goss in a battle of southpaws in an ILH regular-season opener at the Owls’ Damon Field. No score after two innings, though Punahou has advanced runners into scoring position in each of the first two. Top of the third — a three-run home run by Easton Takamoto over the centerfield fence 333 feet away has been determined by the home plate umpire to be just one run on the play. I […]

By Nick Abramo on February 18, 2016

Waimea will induct five athletes into its Menehune Legacy Hall of Honor at a banquet on the campus’ front lawn on April 9. The school will honor: >> Joe Matsukawa, a 1949 Waimea alum who excelled in football and baseball and also played both sports at the University of Hawaii. Matsukawa also played in the 1954 Hula Bowl and coached the Leilehua Mules to the 1962 state baseball championship. >> Laynie Sueyasu, a member of the 1990 state softball champion […]

Roosevelt hires Mols; Hatchie to Waialua

By Nick Abramo on January 19, 2016

Adrian Mols is the new baseball head coach at Roosevelt, according to Rough Riders athletic director John Chung. Mols was an infielder for Roosevelt, graduating in 1999, and then for Occidental College. Mols takes over for Les Loo, who left after last season, when the Rough Riders went 3-8 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East. In other coaching news, George Hatchie is the new baseball head coach at Waialua, according to Bulldogs athletic director Bryce Kaneshiro. Hatchie is also the […]
