All Saint Louis can do is wait and hope

By Billy Hull on April 20, 2016

It was not too long ago that the Saint Louis baseball team was ranked No. 1 in the state. The Crusaders had rattled off six consecutive wins, including an impressive 4-1 victory over Mid-Pacific, and was on top of the ILH halfway through the regular season. Now, the Crusaders are forced to play the waiting game and may have taken the field for the final time on Tuesday in a 6-4 loss to ‘Iolani in the ILH second-round tournament. Saint […]

Lute makes transition from softball to baseball

By Nick Abramo on April 16, 2016

If you notice the Nanakuli catcher looks like a girl, it’s because she is a girl. Cheyenne Lute is her name and she’s batting .429 and fulfilling a role as a team leader for the Golden Hawks (2-9). If you recall her name, it might be from her starring role in Nanakuli’s push to the Division II softball state championship last year. She earned tournament most outstanding player honors as a pitcher. Lute decided to play junior varsity baseball in […]

Timing is everything for Raiders, Warriors

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2016

In the merciless world of Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball, consistency and success are often a matter of timing. For the ‘Iolani Raiders, making it this far, reaching the double-elimination format of the ILH playoffs, is a minor miracle. The fifth-place Raiders were 4-11 in the regular season, almost forgotten after starting the season in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 for three weeks. The Raiders seemed dormant again in a single-elimination play-in game against fourth-place (and No. 9 statewide) Kamehameha on […]

Tale of the two shining OIA shortstops

By Nick Abramo on April 8, 2016

It was just another Oahu Interscholastic Association West baseball game. Undefeated Pearl City visited Waipahu on Wednesday. The Chargers improved to 10-0 with a 16-7 win after breaking a 6-6 tie with six runs in the sixth, and the Marauders fell more toward the bottom of the standings at 2-7. Both shortstops, however, combined to bat 1.000 at the plate. Let’s start with Waipahu senior Kobie Russell, who was offered and committed to the University of Hawaii when he was […]

Kaiser gets chippy in win over Kalani

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2016

There are rivalries that take on a semi-friendly tone. This one was far from it. When Kalani visited Kaiser on Friday afternoon for an OIA East baseball game, both the visiting Falcons and the home plate umpire were targets of verbal abuse from Kaiser players and at least one Kaiser supporter in the audience. It was an exceedingly feisty effort by the Cougars, who won 5-4 in an upset of the fifth-ranked Falcons. Three Cougars were tossed from the game, […]

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2016

Rivals Kaiser and Kalani are battling on a windy, cloudy afternoon in Hawaii Kai. Rivals? One assistant coach has already been tossed and it’s just the second inning. Kalani (9-1) is ranked No. 5 in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. Kamau Simeona of Kaiser versus Connor Zalewski of Kalani. 1st Reece Kakugawa of Kalani doubles with two outs but is stranded. Keoni Pangan leads off for Kaiser with a swinging bunt for a single. With one out, Lincoln Lima bunts […]
