The Day After: Kailua’s steady seniors

By Paul Honda on April 23, 2016

As far as Corey Ishigo is concerned, luck and compassion go hand in hand. That might be true of any baseball coach who’s been around the game as long as he has. Kailua had an up-and-down regular season, always competitive, but trailed Kalani in the standings when the playoffs arrived. Then Ishigo and his team did what they often do: play with excellence. In the OIA Division semifinal round on Friday, the Surfriders banged out eight hits against three Pearl […]

Two Cinderellas enter, one Cinderella leaves

By Paul Honda on April 23, 2016

Mirror images, maybe. Just not mirror results. When the Waipahu Marauders stepped into one of the vintage parks for baseball in the islands on Friday, it was as good as Cinderella arriving at the ball. After a 3-9 regular season in the OIA West, the Marauders knocked off Moanalua and Mililani in the first two rounds of the OIA playoffs. Kalani is on a fairy-tale run of its own, now 13-2 after pulling out a 3-2, eight-inning semifinal victory. Waipahu […]

UPDATE: Kailua 9, Pearl City 3, F

By Paul Honda on April 22, 2016

Catching up after filing my story on the earlier semifinal, Kalani’s 3-2 win over Waipahu in eight innings. Kailua doesn’t score in the first three innings, but a line drive off the bat of Noah Auld hits pitcher Carson Okada in the head. The ball caroms to first base, where the third out is made, but Okada leaves the game. Pearl City, the first-place team out of the OIA West, scored a run in the bottom of the third to […]

UPDATE: Kalani 3, Waipahu 2, F (8 inn)

By Paul Honda on April 22, 2016

Sunny, almost breezeless afternoon at Hans L’Orange Park in Waipahu. Partly cloudy and temperature is a balmy 85 or so. Kalani, the first-place finisher in the OIA East, is the home team against upstart Waipahu. The Marauders have Michael Price on the mound. Kalani has Duke Fujii. It has been quite a week already for the Marauders, who have, historically, one of the proudest baseball traditions around as a community. Waipahu was 3-9 in the OIA West, then upset Moanalua […]

Viela hired as new KS-Maui athletic director

By Nick Abramo on April 21, 2016

Baldwin baseball head coach Jon Viela is the new Kamehameha-Maui athletic director, a school spokesperson confirmed Wednesday. The hire was first reported by the Maui News. Viela will take over on June 1 after the school sports season concludes. Blane Gaison was the school’s previous athletic director, but left the post to become the Interscholastic League of Honolulu executive director. Leo Delatori served as acting athletic director in the interim. The school is in the process of hiring a new […]

UPDATE: Kalani 8, Kaiser 3, F

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2016

Sunny afternoon at Kahala Community Park for this OIA Division I quarterfinal game between Kaiser and No. 5 Kalani. The teams split their series during the regular season. Kaiser ace Kamalu Simeona hurled the Cougars to a 5-2 win over Aiea on Wednesday in the opening round. Kalani ace Connor Zalewski is on the mound. Chase Asuncion is the starting pitcher for Kaiser. The winner secures an automatic state-tournament berth. 1st Simeona is hit by pitch with one out. Kainoa […]

When the student becomes the teacher

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2016

One of the most informative, even slightly entertaining, moments on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Middle School baseball field came not during a great battle between the Waianae Seariders and Roosevelt Rough Riders, but after. Moments after Roosevelt pitcher Hiram Kaikaina hurled a complete-game 6-5 win over the hardy Seariders, he and his teammates went about the usual post-game routine, tending to the diamond. Freshman second baseman Rylan Terakawa had himself, perhaps, the game of his life. He went 1-for-2 with […]

Waianae baseball coach on leave

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2016

The Waianae Seariders nearly pulled off a great comeback win on Wednesday on the road in an OIA D-I playoff game against Roosevelt. Roosevelt prevailed 6-5, ending Waianae’s season. Instead of Walt Grilho, assistant coach Bernard Beaver was in charge. Grilho, their second-year head coach, said that he is “on leave.” Grilho was part of Kekoa Kaluhiokalani‘s staff and had been an assistant since 1998. He declined to comment during a phone conversation on Wednesday night, citing the school and […]
