Busy-bee Buffanblu in 1-and-done mode

By Paul Honda on April 27, 2016

There’s nothing Saint Louis and Punahou can do about their predicament. Saint Louis has been atop the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 this season. Punahou has played like it for stretches, especially during the ILH playoff tourney. But there’s this: Saint Louis has been idle for more than a week since being eliminated from the double-elimination playoffs. Punahou has been a busy bee, losing on Tuesday to Mid-Pacific. Maybe too busy. Conversely, it’s possible the Crusaders might be a wee bit […]

UPDATE: Mid-Pacific 3, Punahou 2, F

By Paul Honda on April 26, 2016

So, if you’ve been ignoring or avoiding the world of ILH baseball, here’s where we are: Punahou and Mid-Pacific play for the league’s playoff tournament. It’s been a wild, unpredictable double-elimination format, two weeks of heart break and ecstasy for those involved. If Punahou wins, a state-tournament berth is locked up. If MPI, the regular-season winner, takes this afternoon’s game, the ILH championship is theirs outright. Then Punahou, the playoff tournament runner-up, would then play the Saint Louis, the regular-season […]

Kuratani & Wong: Catcher, Ace lead ‘Canes

By Paul Honda on April 26, 2016

There is nothing but pride on the West side once again, but this time, it’s the baseball team at Kapolei beaming. One year after Campbell’s HHSAA Division I state championship, it’s the Hurricanes making inroads at the D-II level. With a come-from-behind 9-4 win over Kalaheo on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park, the ‘Canes captured their first league title in D-II. Kamea Wong was resilient on the mound for coach Thomas Ebanez’s squad with nine strikeouts in 6 innings. He […]

Brotherhood and another Kailua baseball title

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2016

For the 13th time in OIA history, the baseball championship belongs to the boys in blue from Kailua High School. The Surfriders opened an early lead and hung on for a 7-5 win over Kalani on Saturday for the league title at Hans L’Orange Park, and to a man, they handled it with maturity. “We worked so hard for this,” outfielder/pitcher Joey Cantillo said. “There was no way this game was getting away from us. Kalani is a good team […]

Punahou perks up too late (+ full box score)

By Nick Abramo on April 24, 2016

The bad news for Punahou is it came oh-so-close but failed to wrap up a baseball state tournament berth Saturday. The good news for the Buffanblu (11-8) is they still have two more chances to get it done. After yielding five runs to Mid-Pacific in the fifth inning, things looked bleak for Punahou. A 5-0 deficit appeared to be too much to overcome at the Owls’ home field. But, sometimes magic happens and it started to show up in the […]

Raiders went down fighting (+ full box score)

By Nick Abramo on April 23, 2016

‘Iolani went down fighting. The Raiders baseball team started the season strong, but hit the skids and finished the regular season 4-11. They righted the ship enough to beat contenders Saint Louis and Kamehameha in the postseason and nearly upset top-ranked Mid-Pacific on Friday. Instead, with one swing of the bat, the Owls’ Jacob Maekawa drilled a double to left field to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win, ending ‘Iolani’s season. Prior to […]

UPDATE: Kailua 7, Kalani 5, F

By Paul Honda on April 23, 2016

Kailua has won 12 OIA baseball championships, including six under current coach Corey Ishigo. Kalani hasn’t won one since 1971. The two teams are going at it tonight in the OIA Division I final at Hans L’Orange Park. 1st Dustin Imanaka and Dalton Kalama started it off for the Surfriders with walks off Kalani starting pitcher Micah Kawano. Noah Auld then doubled to right center, bringing home both base runners. KAIL 2, KLN 0. Lawson Faria’s blooper to short center […]

UPDATE: Kapolei 9, Kalaheo 4, F

By Paul Honda on April 23, 2016

The OIA Division II baseball championship is about to start here at Hans L’Orange Park. Dark and overcast, muggy for the past hour. Feels like rain is on the way. I’m expecting one or two rain delays, but I’m no weatherman. Kapolei is 12-0 in OIA D-II play and Kalaheo is 9-4. Both teams have already secured state-tournament berths. Kapolei won both matchups during the regular season by scores of 5-2 and 8-0. 1st The Mustangs score twice in the […]
