By Paul Honda on May 6, 2016

Pitcher Markus Ramos became the latest young Campbell Saber to clutch up in the postseason. WAILUKU — The OIA West is an incredible 9-0 so far in the Division I and II state baseball tournaments so far. I doubt this has ever happened, and though it’s remarkable, it simply continues a pattern of success for West Oahu region athletics in the past decade as the population base of Oahu continues to shift from east to west. That being said, Waipahu is up against perennial powerhouse Baldwin, the MIL champion. The Bears are 14-0 in MIL […]

WAILUKU — Here we go. A beautiful, sunny, blue-sky morning in Wailuku. So much for yesterday’s gray skies and 25 mph wind. Lefty Joey Cantillo is starting on the mound for Kailua, the OIA champion, against the OIA’s fifth-place team, Campbell. The Sabers stunned Punahou last night in the opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I Baseball State Championships. LIVE UPDATE: Campbell 3, Punahou 2, F

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2016

WAILUKU — The Sabers are a year removed from a snow-cap, peak-level dynastic force that won the state tournament. But this year’s team has made a strong run into the post-season. ILH runner-up Punahou is ranked fourth in the Star-Advertiser Top 10. Campbell is unranked. But are the Sabers being overlooked? 1st Shane Shimizu led off with a single to left, but the Sabers didn’t get into scoring position against Punahou starting pitcher Noah Goss. Punahou went 1-2-3 in the […]

Ogasawara masterful for Mililani

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2016

Mililani’s Justin Ogasawara thrived in windy conditions, stifling Kalani with a five-hit, complete-game effort to lead the Trojans to a 7-1 upset win over the Falcons on Wednesday at Iron Maehara Stadium in opening-round play of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I Baseball State Championships. “This is big for us. We know that we’re good. We had to do what we do at practice,” Ogasawara said. Mililani (11-5) came into the game as the sixth-place team out of the OIA […]
