The Baldwin baseball team is ranked No. 21 in the country in the latest USA Today Super 25 rankings released today. The Bears (6-0) jumped two spots up from No. 23 where they debuted in the rankings last week. Baldwin, which won the state title in 2016, has won its first six games by a combined score of 56-3. The Bears have been ranked No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 in each of the last two weeks. […]

St. Francis loses, but weathers Maryknoll onslaught

By Nick Abramo on March 28, 2018

St. Francis lost a game that was almost brutally quick Tuesday. But, thanks to some intestinal fortitude by the ILH Division II Saints, what could easily have been a mercy-rule embarrassment turned into a close game. Trailing by 10 runs to Division I Maryknoll after two innings, St. Francis made a game of it, pulling within two before falling 13-8 at Hans L’Orange Park. The early going was rough, for sure, replete with poor throws, misjudgments, and pitchers hitting batters […]

No. 4 Punahou edges No. 3 Kamehameha at the Les

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2018

Even in the aftermath of a close loss, Kamehameha coach Kahi Kaanoi enjoyed the chance to see his team play in one of college baseball’s jewels when it comes to home fields. There’s nothing quite like Les Murakami Stadium, where No. 4 Punahou pulled out a 4-3 win over No. 3 Kamehameha on Tuesday night. “I love playing here. It’s a lot of fun,” said Kaanoi, the former Warrior ace and MLB pitcher. “It’s a great atmosphere. You could tell […]

Parents make it possible for ILH to play at the Les

By Nick Abramo on March 26, 2018

A group of parents and coaches of ILH baseball players have stepped up to give their kids and teammates a chance to play at Les Murakami Stadium this season, beginning today. The ILH agreed to move nine games over four days to Murakami Stadium as long as the parents and coaches guaranteed the ILH would not lose money on renting the University of Hawaii’s field. One parent already gave the ILH a check for $13,231.30, which was the initial estimate […]

Silva’s sterling effort boosts Campbell into OIA West lead

By Paul Honda on March 26, 2018

Instead of tiring, Ayzek Silva did what he has often done in his young career. The 6-foot-1 southpaw grew stronger as the game went along. In fact, in the course of six shutout innings during Campbell’s 2-0 win over Mililani, the junior got better with each inning. After the third inning, the former closer faced just nine batters in the next three innings before departing. He probably could’ve finished the game, which was his role as a freshman. Silva finished […]

Damien embracing D-I competition

By Paul Honda on March 20, 2018

No, the Damien Monarchs aren’t a clone of Mid-Pacific. But there’s just a faint resemblance, and it goes beyond the light gray uniforms each team wore in the second-ranked Owls’ 13-3, five-inning win on Tuesday afternoon. Like MPI, the Monarchs have stressed defensive fundamentals in their rise to prominence in Division II. Damien won the ILH D-II crown last season, outlasting St. Francis in a marathon playoff run and series, before losing to Kauai in the state final. The Monarchs […]

Kamehameha makes big jump in Top 10

By Billy Hull on March 19, 2018

Voters continue to have opposing views on baseball in Hawaii in 2018 with another week of much change in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 released today. There’s a new No. 1 for the third straight week as Baldwin of the MIL takes over the top spot. The Bears swept three games against Lahainaluna over the weekend, winning by a combined score of 33-2. Baldwin has received at least half of the first-place votes in every poll this season but […]

Kamehameha comes back twice to beat Punahou

By Christian Shimabuku on March 17, 2018

The logjam at the top of the ILH standings () is still ever-shifting after Saturday’s games, thanks to No. 10 Kamehameha’s 7-6 win over No. 6 Punahou in eight innings. With less than a month remaining before the regular season comes to a close, the Warriors seem as well-prepared as anyone for the uncertainty that the league brings. It started in late January, when head coach Thomas Perkins and his staff were let go two days before tryouts and Kahi […]
