Moanalua pulls out 14-13 win over Kaiser

By Christian Shimabuku on April 4, 2018

Wednesday afternoon’s OIA East baseball matchup between Kaiser and Moanalua produced a total of 30 hits, nine errors and two disappointed coaches. Na Menehune’s 14-13 walk-off victory over the Cougars on senior night never failed to entertain, with each team taking advantage of the other’s mistakes. Despite trailing 13-10 entering the home half of the seventh, Moanalua (6-4) rallied to top Kaiser (5-4) after Andrew Oasay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. “We can fight back. We’re […]

The Les is bringing out the drama in ILH baseball

By Billy Hull on April 4, 2018

Four Division I teams are within a game of first place in the ILH. Including Division II St. Francis, exactly half of the teams in the league have either two or three losses. The league is shaping up for a wild April and Les Murakami Stadium has been the perfect place to showcase the madness. Tuesday night’s 5-3 victory by ‘Iolani over Kamehameha in the second game of a doubleheader was the first time in five games played at the […]

Mid-Pacific, Baldwin tied for top spot

By Billy Hull on April 2, 2018

For three consecutive weeks, just two votes separated Baldwin and Mid-Pacific at the top of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. This week, that number is zero. The undefeated Bears (6-0) and ILH-leading Owls (7-1) are tied at No. 1 despite receiving a different number of first-place votes. Baldwin, which is ranked No. 21 in the country by USA Today, received seven of the 10 first-place votes but oddly enough, did not receive a second-place vote. On the three ballots […]

Trip to Seattle prepared Radford for the rain

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2018

Radford thought the bad weather was all in the past, but at least the Rams were ready for Saturday’s drizzly baseball game against rival Farrington. The Rams visited the Seattle area last week to play two games against local high school teams and got a taste of the springtime weather in the Pacific Northwest. “It was the exact same weather,” said Radford coach Jacob Sur, referring to the rain that never stopped during the Rams’ 6-3 home victory over the […]

By Hawaii Prep World on March 31, 2018

All ILH baseball games scheduled for Saturday have been postponed. Damien was scheduled to play ‘Iolani at noon and Saint Louis was supposed to play Mid-Pacific at 3 p.m. A doubleheader at Hans L’Orange Park featuring Pac-Five against Punahou and Kamehameha against St. Francis has also been washed out. ILH softball games between Kamehameha and host ‘Iolani and Punahou and St. Francis at Ala Wai Field scheduled for 2 p.m. have also been rained out. The ILH just recently rescheduled […]

No. 4 Campbell finishes off impressive week

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2018

In the wickedly dangerous OIA West, having an ace pitcher is nice. It is often not enough. Having two good hurlers is even better, but as this week has shown, in the West it’s a good hand. It’s nice. Campbell has a three-man pitching rotation, matched by few teams statewide, and the result is a six-game win streak, including three wins in five days this week. The Sabers, with a surprisingly easy 10-0 win over second-place Pearl City on Friday […]

Yoshino, Young are clutch for MPI under the lights

By Billy Hull on March 29, 2018

No. 2 Mid-Pacific waited nine long days to play a game like this one. Jacob Yoshino singled home Wyatt Young, who tripled with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth inning, to give the second-ranked Owls a 5-4 win over No. 4 Punahou to cap a memorable ILH doubleheader on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium. Earlier, Kamehameha’s Li’i Pontes tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts in a 4-3 win over Saint Louis. Playing their […]

Kamehameha’s Pontes at full strength

By Billy Hull on March 29, 2018

Regardless of pitch count, Kamehameha right-hander Li’i Pontes was facing his final batter. With the tying run at second and two outs, Pontes, a University of Hawaii signee, finished off a three-hit complete game victory getting Cole Kashimoto to ground out to third to end a 4-3 win over Saint Louis on Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium. Pontes struck out nine and threw 108 pitches, impressing first-year head coach Kahi Ka’anoi in the process. “He’s a smart pitcher who has […]
