MPI’s 14th ILH title anything but easy

By Billy Hull on April 27, 2018

Mid-Pacific made its 14th ILH baseball championship under longtime head coach Dunn Muramaru look easy on Friday, scoring 10 runs in the first inning on the way to a 12-1 rout of ‘Iolani in five innings at Hans L’Orange Park. “Easy” is probably the last word to describe what the year has been like for the Owls, who were coming off a rare losing season that snapped a streak of five consecutive league titles from 2012 to ’16. The offseason […]

Damien, St. Francis set for another epic finish

By Paul Honda on April 26, 2018

What can be said about two teams that have played seven times since the regular season began? This is deja vu all over again for the Damien Monarchs and St. Francis Saints, who went through this last year. >> St. Francis wins the regular season in ILH Division II. >> Damien wins the league tournament. >> With St. Francis needing just one victory in the title series — Damien needed two as the tournament winner — the Saints saw their […]

MPI closes in on ILH title with walk-off win

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2018

The wind was wicked and unkind, but neither the Owls nor the Raiders would succumb often. There were dazzling, whirling catches by the visiting ‘Iolani Raiders on a rainy afternoon. Swirling winds made life difficult on routine pop flies. By the end, regular-season winner Mid-Pacific edged ‘Iolani 7-6 on a game-winning sacrifice fly by Jet Uechi, and the dream flourishes for the Owls. They are now the only remaining unbeaten team in the ILH baseball double-elimination tournament. For a long […]

Matsushita throws a 55-pitch complete game for MPI

By Christian Shimabuku on April 24, 2018

Showing that it’s not content with an ILH regular season title and the comfort of an automatic state berth, Mid-Pacific rode the arm of Shion Matsushita to a 3-1 first round victory over Saint Louis on Monday at Damon Field. The Owls’ ace pitched a complete game gem and only needed an astounding 55 pitches to get the job done. He was also buoyed by an impeccable defense led by shortstop Wyatt Young, who often made challenging plays look routine. […]

Mililani town celebrates OIA baseball title

By Nick Abramo on April 22, 2018

Mililani lit fireworks at the high school Saturday night for its 50th birthday celebration. And the Trojans baseball team made its own fireworks at Les Murakami Stadium by nipping Kailua 5-4 to win its first OIA title since 1997. That last championship 21 years ago was under coach Glenn Nitta, who has been with the school since it opened in 1973 — five years after the inception of the town. “It’s special with all the competition we face in the […]

OIA champion Farrington makes history

By Christian Shimabuku on April 21, 2018

In order for Farrington’s baseball team to make history on Saturday, it first had to defy it. For starters, there was recent history. The Governors were going up against a Radford team that had beaten them twice earlier in the season. To make circumstances more challenging, the Rams trotted out ace Jack Dillon to start the game, who tossed a no-hitter against Farrington last year. With the odds stacked against them, the Governors prevailed 6-4 to give the school its […]

Mililani on cusp of substantial breakthrough

By Nick Abramo on April 21, 2018

Mililani is always in the postseason, but the Trojans don’t have a lot of hardware to show for it. That could change Saturday night in the OIA baseball championship game against Kailua. Mililani earned the right to be there with a 6-5 roller-coaster victory over Campbell on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. A quick check at the record book shows that the Trojans’ last OIA championship came in 1997 under Glenn Nitta, the current Mililani athletic director who has […]
