By Paul Honda on April 12, 2019

With the marathon of an ILH baseball season nearly behind them, the Saint Louis Crusaders are staring directly at the double-elimination playoffs. Then again, with a 12-day break, Crusaders coach George Gusman decided to make the most of it. His team will play in the inaugural Bishop Gorman All-Catholic Classic in Las Vegas, which begins on Monday and concludes Thursday. Saint Louis (17-5, 12-3 ILH) is ranked No. 3 in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 and is the only Hawaii […]

Campbell may have found its closer in Kaimana Savaiinaea

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2019

Campbell junior Kaimana Savaiinaea gave a masterful closing performance Wednesday in the Sabers’ 4-1 baseball victory over Aiea. With the bases loaded and just one out, the 6-foot-3 Savaiinaea faced heavy-duty pressure and got through it in textbook fashion. Of his nine pitches, seven were strikes, and the only contact made was a foul ball. The two batters he faced went down on strikes and the Sabers breathed a lot easier with the victory in hand. >> CLICK HERE FOR […]

Joshua Lee stays hot, powers Waipahu to top seed in OIA D-II

By Paul Honda on April 10, 2019

Joshua Lee can belt the ball a long way with his bat, but it’s the minutiae of execution as a team that intrigues the Waipahu junior. Lee blasted a two-run homer in the first inning, then smacked a run-scoring double in the third as unbeaten Waipahu sealed first place in OIA Division II with a 9-4 win over Radford on Wednesday. >> CLICK HERE FOR PHOTO GALLERY FROM TODAY’S GAME Lee came up with the big hits, but he and […]

1-ON-1: Eric Kadooka opens up on stepping down at Maryknoll

By Nick Abramo on April 9, 2019

Eric Kadooka made a stunning, seemingly out-of-the-blue decision last week, leaving his position as baseball coach at Maryknoll. But he did it after lots of reflection on the state of the program he was running. The Spartans were 4-9 in the ILH when he departed. “I don’t blame anybody, but I felt that if I removed myself from the situation, it would give another coach a chance to see if they can make that connection,” said Kadooka, who won seven […]

Punahou locks up state berth, best record in ILH regular season

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2019

Tyler Shimabukuro kept tinkering, kept lingering, and finally, he has emerged as a force. The Punahou junior right-hander had just two appearances on the mound in the first three weeks of ILH play. He recorded a combined three innings against Division II programs Pac-Five and Hanalani, and did not register in the win or loss column. Then came a five-inning stint against Maryknoll, allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and just one walk. It was his first […]

By Billy Hull on April 8, 2019

For the first time since the preseason poll in 2011 following a seventh straight state championship, the Punahou Buffanblu baseball team is ranked in the top two in the state. Punahou (12-2 ILH), which can clinch its first back-to-back state tournament appearance since that run of state titles from 2004 to ’10 with a win over Kamehameha this afternoon at Goeas Field, jumped to No. 2 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 released today. The Buffanblu moved up a […]

Hunter Peneueta, Saint Louis derail Punahou from clinching state berth

By Nick Abramo on April 6, 2019

Punahou was on its way to clinching a state tourament berth … or so it seemed. The Buffanblu jetted out to a 4-0 lead in a major ILH baseball duel Saturday and positive energy was emanating from their dugout. Over on the Saint Louis side, it was real quiet. The Crusaders left the bases loaded in the second inning and it looked like the game was going to be a dud for them. “It’s been a struggle for us all […]
