No-error baseball propels Waimea into D-II state baseball final

By Nick Abramo on May 10, 2019

The island of Kauai will be going for its fifth Division II championship Saturday in the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships. The fourth-seeded Waimea Menehunes didn’t make an error and only had three hits, but still got past top-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii 4-1 at Lihue’s Vidinha Stadium. The defensive prowess began in the opening inning, when third baseman Kainalu Lazaro chased down a high foul pop near the fence. Then, for the third out of the inning, Lazaro knocked down a […]

Who did it? JR (Suehisa) sprints home to lift Mililani over Baldwin

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2019

WAILUKU >> For JR Suehisa and the Mililani Trojans, success is worth repeating. It was certainly, as the philosophical guru Yogi Berra once said, deja vu all over again. Just two weeks after scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the OIA championship game, Suehisa scored from third base on a wild pitch as Mililani ousted defending state champion Baldwin 2-1 in eight innings on Friday night. Mililani (19-6 overall) advanced to the final of the Wally Yonamine […]

Makana Murashige’s grand slam powers Punahou into final

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2019

WAILUKU >> Keenan Sue likes execution. Fundamentals. The Punahou coach got plenty from his Buffanblu on Friday night in a 10-2 semifinal win over BIIF champion Hilo at Iron Maehara Stadium. “Everybody has a similar game. In Hawaii, we don’t have a lot of really big, strong guys. We’ve got to put the ball in play, hard line drives, ground balls, make the defense work. I think the teams that have been doing that in this tournament have been advancing,” […]

St. Francis baseball will write athletic program’s final chapter Saturday

By Nick Abramo on May 10, 2019

St. Francis has been through some rough times this year. The school announced it is closing at the end of this semester. The football team forfeited away a 9-0 season due to an ineligible player. But the Saints’ athletes have persevered. The baseball team is one step away from winning the Division II baseball state championship. “This is a talented team,” Kip Akana, coach of third-seeded St. Francis, said Friday after an 11-1, six-inning, mercy-rule victory over second-seeded Radford at […]

Umpire Matt Kano struck by bat during state tournament

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2019

Home plate umpire Matt Kano was hit by a thrown bat during the third inning of the Kailua-Kaiser consolation game Friday. The batter had started running toward first base, flung his bat back toward the dugout — roughly 15 feet — and it hit the umpire on the side of the head. It was a fly ball toward left-center and Kano had left the plate area to track the ball when he was struck. He was treated by trainers and […]

Campbell’s Ayzek Silva closes career with 4-hit shutout of Maui

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2019

There is meaning in every season, every game, every inning. Every pitch. The early-morning sun was unkind, but the Campbell Sabers made the most of their opportunity. Eliminated from title contention two days earlier, they took the diamond at historic Iron Maehara Stadium and belted out a song of victory, blanking Maui 3-0 to stay alive for one more day. Ayzek Silva, arguably the best pitcher in the OIA, perhaps in the state, got his turn and fired a four-hitter.. […]

LIVE BLOG: Day 3, Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Tourney

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2019

The semifinals are underway on a sunny, slightly breezy afternoon at Iron Maehara Stadium. Final: Mililani 2, Baldwin 1 Mililani will meet Punahou for the state title on Saturday, 6 p.m. Bot 8: Like Baldwin, Mililani has the top of the order lined up. Suehisa rips the first pitch from Constantino off the first-base bag for a single. After three throws by Constantino to first base, Oshiro’s sac bunt moves Suehisa to second base. Baldwin coach Shane Dudoit approaches the […]

Kaipo Haole, Baba Varner hurl Baldwin over Waiakea sluggers

By Paul Honda on May 9, 2019

WAILUKU — On Day 1, it was a sluggers paradise at normally power-free Iron Maehara Stadium. Big bashers from Kamehameha and Saint Louis led the power surge as teams combined for a whopping six home runs. The record for HRs in an entire state tourney at Iron Maehara was six, which was eclipsed with one more HR today, giving the 2019 state tournament seven here. The mark for taters at any site is 12, achieved at Aloha Stadium in 1987. […]
