Maui Prep living in the moment; top seed Kohala awaits

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2022

If you ask, Zach Bailey will tell you why basketball life on the Valley Island is good. Very good. After all, building a Division II powerhouse on an island that had limited access to facilities and offseason leagues for such a long time is not easy. For Bailey, a Physical Education and Health teacher at Maui Preparatory Academy, nothing is quite like the moment. His boys basketball squad is two steps away from a state championship after racing past KIF […]

Sophomore Jeremiah White’s 26 points boosts Kaimuki over Le Jardin

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2022

Jeremiah White knows solitude well. When his family moved back home from Texas a few years ago, there was peace. Reconnection with aunties and uncles and cousins. Then, in a blink of an eye, everything changed. White’s father, Josh “Zeus” White, passed away in 2020. He was 43. The legendary Farrington and Cal running back was simply dad to Jeremiah, who later enrolled at Kaimuki High School. “I knew this kid was special,” Kaimuki boys basketball coach Greydon Espinda said. […]

HBA’s fullcourt press is baptism by fire for Seabury Hall

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2022

Kellen Kaneshiro doesn’t call it “32 minutes of hell,” but for opponents facing Hawaii Baptist’s tenacious fullcourt press, it often turns out that way. Back in the day, Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson called his team’s utter devotion to fullcourt pressing, “40 Minutes of Hell.” John Thompson had his furious defenders at Georgetown pressing from start to finish, too. All he wanted was to wear his opponent down in those last four minutes. Often enough, in an even battle, his foes […]

Coaches Tribune: D-II defending champ Kohala in dynamite field

By Paul Honda on February 23, 2022

This group of eight sure is elite. Kohala is back to defend its 2020 Division II boys basketball state title, but the field from top to bottom is without a weak link. Kaimuki is the No. 2 seed in a bit of a surprise, but the Bulldogs have quality wins over Division I programs like Radford, Moanalua and Kaiser. Hawaii Baptist, seeded third, may be the most disciplined squad in the bracket, while Kapaa (fourth seed) and Maui Prep (fifth) […]

The quarterfinal round in Divisions I and II are on Thursday. More of the same by Kahuku, Maryknoll, Kailua, ‘Iolani in boys hoops opening round

By Paul Honda on February 23, 2022

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Monday’s opening-round games isn’t that the favorites won. Maybe it is just that every favorite won by its own choice of methodology. Kahuku pounded the rock inside. Maryknoll won with a deliberate pace. Kailua let Jonny Philbrick eat. ‘Iolani went to the race track. All in all, the first boys state championships in two years went according to the book. The Heide & Cook/HHSAA State Championships resumes on Thursday with quarterfinal matchups at Moanalua […]

Saint Louis boys an undisputed No. 1 entering big dance

By Paul Honda on February 22, 2022

Saint Louis collected all 10 first-place votes to remain an undisputed No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 on Monday. The Crusaders (17-2 overall) enter the Heide & Cook/HHSAA State Championships this week as the top seed. Mililani won the OIA title last week and zoomed three notches higher to No. 3. The Trojans are 14-1 overall, with the only blemish a 63-61 overtime loss to Saint Louis in preseason. The top seed in the D-II state championships, […]

Hoopbook: Mililani changes speeds en route to OIA title run

By Paul Honda on February 17, 2022

The men of Troy prefer to run. Run and gun. 80-point games would be a regular theme for Mililani if a shot clock were mandatory. Instead, the Trojans do what many elite teams do with a lead and the ball in the final minutes of a high school game in Hawaii. They made people chase. The MIlilani Trojans are OIA Division I boys basketball champions after a 43-26 win over Kailua not because they can play the four-corners game better […]
