MAY 11, 1979: Chris McLachlin steps down as Punahou hoops coach

On this date in 1979, Punahou lost one of its most successful basketball coaches for the second time in five years.

Chris McLachlin, who took the Buffanblu to the state title a few months before, resigned to spend more time with his family.

His son, future PGA pro Parker McLachlin, was born two days earlier.

Chris McLachlin, a 1964 grad at the school, went 165-30 as Punahou’s basketball coach and won two state championships. Ray Buck replaced McLachlin as coach. He served as McLachlin’s assistant for two years.

McLachlin came back to win another state basketball title in 1990 and 11 in boys volleyball before retiring for good in 2007.

Despite being a St. Damien graduate, I have ALWAYS admired Chris McLachlin !! He is a TRUE gentleman, AWESOME coach, and wonderful father !!
